Misusing air conditioning landed this man in the hospital with a stroke. Strokes occur when the brain is significantly damaged due to prolonged cerebral ischemia, resulting in brain cells not receiving enough oxygen and nutrients to function properly.

The longer this condition persists, the more brain cells die, greatly affecting one’s motor and cognitive abilities, and even leading to death. Most stroke survivors experience health complications or after-effects such as paralysis, aphasia, emotional disorders, and vision impairment.

This man’s misuse of air conditioning led to a stroke that required hospitalization.

Additionally, using air conditioning incorrectly during the summer can lead to other serious health issues. Many people mistakenly believe that air conditioning is only a temporary solution for hot days, but in reality, it can become a silent killer if overused or misused.

In the scorching summer heat, the human body is prone to dehydration and increased blood salt concentration. Continuously using air conditioning without proper hydration can cause a significant temperature difference between the indoors and outdoors, stimulating the blood vessels in the skin to constantly dilate and contract, which can trigger problems such as strokes.

PGS.TS Nguyen Tien Dung from Bach Mai Hospital warns, “Suddenly entering a cold room after being outdoors in the heat or engaging in physical activities can be a shock to the body and may lead to a stroke. For those with dilated blood vessels due to sun exposure or intense exercise, stepping into a cold room can cause the blood vessels to constrict sharply, increasing the risk of a stroke.”

Experts also advise that there are alternative ways to stay cool during the summer without relying heavily on air conditioning.

There are alternative ways to stay cool without relying heavily on air conditioning, according to experts.

Individuals with health conditions such as high blood pressure or high blood fat should avoid spending extended periods in air-conditioned rooms, especially when there is a significant temperature difference between indoors and outdoors. Instead of consuming cold foods like iced watermelon, ice cream, or icy drinks to cool down, it is recommended to stay comfortable and take warmer showers.

The following are dangerous ways of using air conditioning that can put your life at risk:

Sleeping in an air-conditioned room after drinking alcohol: When intoxicated, people tend to lose consciousness and may fall asleep in a room that is too cold. Prolonged exposure to cold without protection can lead to dangerous conditions such as shock or paralysis.

Directing air conditioning vents towards children: Blowing cold air at a very low temperature directly at children for extended periods can cause pain and even paralysis. Adjust the vents so that the air does not blow directly onto the child, especially their head and limbs.

Sitting in front of the air conditioner right after taking a night shower: After showering, your body temperature drops. Continuing to sit in front of an air conditioner or fan can negatively affect blood circulation and lead to cardiovascular and blood pressure issues. Those with weak immune systems who lie down under an air conditioner right after showering are at a higher risk of stroke and other health complications.

Running into an air-conditioned room when transitioning from hot to cold environments and vice versa: This habit is extremely dangerous and can lead to heat stroke, with a high risk of stroke. When moving from an extremely hot environment to a very cold one, or vice versa, the body cannot adapt quickly to the drastic temperature change.

Keeping the air conditioner on all day: Running the air conditioner continuously throughout the day can have serious health implications, especially if you remain in a confined space with air conditioning for extended periods. Limit your time in an air-conditioned room to no more than two hours at a time, and when you leave the room, open a window and stand in the doorway for a few minutes to allow your body to adjust to the new temperature gradually.

Lowering the air conditioner temperature when a child is sweating: During hot days, children tend to sweat easily. Lowering the air conditioner temperature while their sweat is still wet can cause their pores to suddenly constrict, leading to health issues due to rapid cooling.

Leaving the room immediately after turning off the air conditioner: After turning off the air conditioner, it is not advisable to let children leave the room immediately, as this can create a significant temperature difference, causing discomfort and increasing the risk of headaches and catching a cold. It is best to let them remain in the room for a few minutes before stepping out.
