Located far from the city center of Ben Tre, Bao Thanh Elementary School (Bao Thanh commune, Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province) is a school in a remote area and is listed among the 45 most difficult communes in coastal and island areas nationwide. Mr. Pham Ngoc Toan, the school principal, said that in the 2024-2025 school year, out of 752 students, 145 were from poor or near-poor households. Many students are in especially difficult circumstances and may have to drop out of school because their parents cannot afford to send them to school.

The school consists of one main campus and three branches, with deteriorating infrastructure and challenging teaching and learning conditions. However, thanks to the school’s efforts and the support of parents, in the new 2024-2025 school year, Bao Thanh School welcomed all students to enroll, just like other schools across the country.

To encourage and motivate students on their journey of pursuing knowledge, Vinamilk and the Fund organized a special opening ceremony to welcome the new school year. Not only was the school decorated with more beautiful flags and flowers than previous years, but the opening ceremony for Bao Thanh Elementary School students this year also included nearly 17,000 boxes of fresh milk from the Vietnam Development Fund (called the Milk Fund) and many special gifts to welcome students to school.

“Due to economic difficulties, the nutrition of most students here is limited. When visiting the branch schools, which are far from the commune center, I felt sad to see that the children were much shorter than their peers. The milk provided by the Milk Fund program is a great encouragement for students, and we teachers also share the joy of the children. Hopefully, drinking milk regularly will help the children supplement the necessary nutrients, and through this program, parents will also understand the importance of drinking milk to help children develop physically and intellectually,” Mr. Toan said.

In addition to milk support, Vinamilk also presented the school with the Vietnam Development Bookcase, with nearly 1,000 books and notebooks, hundreds of school supplies, and five laptops for students to practice IT skills and access the vast information and knowledge available on the internet. All of these books were contributed by Vinamilk employees through the internal campaign, “Donate a New Book, Welcome a Child to School.”

On this occasion, the Fund and Vinamilk also presented 30 scholarships to 30 students from difficult backgrounds who have overcome challenges and excelled in their studies to encourage them to persevere in school. Each gift included cash and essential school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks, and Vinamilk water bottles.

In addition, the students also experienced a lively opening day with exciting activities such as creative painting, dressing up as their dream profession, sports games, and quizzes with gifts from Vinamilk…

Phan Van Kiet, a student at Bao Thanh Elementary School, excitedly shared: “Today is the first time I have attended such a fun and gift-filled opening ceremony. I like receiving milk the most because it tastes so good. I also received a new backpack from Vinamilk, and now I have a new bag and books to go to school. I am very happy, and I thank you very much.”

Half a million boxes of milk accompany students to school

Not only the 750 students of Bao Thanh Elementary School but also more than 2,000 disadvantaged children in Ben Tre received more than 135,000 boxes of milk from the Vietnam Development Fund program this school year. From the beginning of 2024 until now, the Milk Fund and Vinamilk have donated nearly 490,000 nutritional products to more than 6,700 disadvantaged students. In particular, just before the new school year, Vinamilk completed the donation of nearly 200,000 boxes of milk to many difficult schools in the provinces/cities of Dien Bien, Hung Yen, Binh Duong, Ben Tre, Can Tho, and Hanoi.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Do Thanh Tuan, Vinamilk’s Director of External Relations, shared that he was happy to share the joy of the first day of school with the students. “I hope that Vinamilk’s companionship will help the children feel the community’s care for their learning and health care, thereby striving to overcome difficulties. For 17 years, Vinamilk believes that the greatest value that the Vietnam Development Fund has given is the dreams and motivation to encourage these children – the future generation of the country – to reach higher in the future,” Mr. Tuan shared.

According to Mr. Dinh Tien Hai, Director of the Vietnam Child Protection Fund, although the program has been implemented for many years, in each place where the Milk Fund stops, there are always children who experience a grand and complete first day of school or drink milk to their heart’s content for the first time.

On the first day of school, the students participated in many creative activities organized by Vinamilk employees

“Since implementing the Vietnam Development Fund program with Vinamilk, the Vietnam Child Protection Fund did not expect the program to last this long. The more we do, the more we realize that there are still many places where children need our care and attention. We hope that the program will continue for many more years so that more disadvantaged children can receive love and support from society”, emphasized Mr. Hai.

During the program, Vinamilk and the Vietnam Child Protection Fund also visited and presented milk to students at the Ben Tre Center for Education and Care for Disabled Children (Huu Dinh commune, Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province) on the first day of school. The center is taking care of, training, rehabilitating, teaching culture, and vocational training for about 300 children with hearing, visual, and intellectual impairments. This is also a beneficiary of the Milk Fund for 14 years. In 2024 alone, students at the center received more than 23,400 boxes of milk from Vinamilk.

The new school year begins with smiles for the students of Bao Thanh Elementary School

Since its inception in 2008, the Vietnam Development Fund program, implemented by Vinamilk and the Vietnam Child Protection Fund for 17 years, is still one of the largest child nutrition care programs and has been implemented long-term and regularly every year to improve the health and physical condition of children through nutrition. It is estimated that the program has donated more than 42 million nutritional products, with a total support value of more than VND 200 billion, to more than half a million disadvantaged children in all 63 provinces and cities, regardless of remote, coastal, island, or border areas./.
