However, a recent insight from UK-based nutritionist and pharmacist, Deborah Grayson, sheds light on a potential health concern when combining tea with certain foods. Specifically, she warns that drinking tea with iron-rich foods can lead to a significant nutritional deficiency.

Grayson explains, “If you regularly drink tea with meals, you could become anemic.” Women during their menstrual cycle are particularly at risk of developing anemia compared to other demographic groups.

Heeding the expert’s advice, it’s crucial to exercise caution when combining different foods to ensure optimal health. Recent studies indicate that tea and coffee contain compounds that can inhibit iron absorption, notably polyphenols, which possess effective anti-inflammatory properties. Polyphenols are present in much lower concentrations in fruits and vegetables.

Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, causing various unpleasant symptoms such as chronic fatigue, hair loss, and frequent infections.

Nutritionist Deborah Grayson also emphasizes that if you’re trying to gain weight or build muscle, it’s best to limit fluid intake during meals. “The presence of fluid in the stomach can impact your food consumption,” she says. Therefore, those struggling with a poor appetite should only drink a few sips of water if needed, refraining from consuming large quantities.

Another recommendation from Deborah is to eat dinner at least three hours before bedtime and to avoid lying down immediately after a meal to prevent acid reflux. Even something as simple as dining at a table instead of on a sofa can promote better digestion.
