Dealing with clogged drains and flooding is a headache and an expensive affair. A cost-effective and quick solution is to use baking soda in combination with the following ingredients.

1. Baking Soda + Vinegar

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain. Cover the drain and let it sit for an hour. Then, pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. Repeat if necessary for a thoroughly cleaned drain.

2. Baking Soda + Lemon Juice

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda, followed by 1/2 cup of lemon juice down the drain. Cover and let it sit for an hour. Finish by pouring boiling water. This combination is great for leaving a pleasant scent in your sink, although lemon juice might be a bit more expensive than vinegar.

3. Baking Soda + Salt

Mix 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of baking soda, then pour it down the drain. Let it sit for about 30 minutes (or overnight for severe clogs) and rinse with a pot of boiling water.

4. Baking Soda + Salt + Tartar Cream

Combine 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of salt, and 2 tablespoons of tartar cream in a closed jar. Shake to mix the ingredients. Pour half of the mixture down the drain and save the rest for next time. Dissolve the mixture with a little boiling water, let it sit for an hour, and then rinse with running water.

5. Salt + Borax + Vinegar

If you don’t have baking soda, you can use salt, borax, and vinegar. First, pour 1/4 cup of salt, then 1/4 cup of borax, and finally, 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for an hour and finish by pouring a pot of boiling water.
