– Newborns with a weak immune system are prone to respiratory diseases, particularly nasal congestion. Here are some helpful tips to relieve nasal congestion in infants without the use of medication.
Use saline solution to rinse the nose
A common method for treating nasal congestion in newborns is using saline solution. With its antibacterial properties, saline solution helps clear the baby’s airway and provides comfort. It not only quickly removes nasal fluids but also cleans and eliminates harmful bacteria on the nasal mucosa.
When administering the saline solution, only use a small drop for each nostril. Gentle massage the baby’s nose on both sides. After dropping the solution into one nostril, wipe the tip of the nose dropper before continuing with the other nostril to prevent infection.
Note that this method can be applied 3 to 5 times depending on the severity of the nasal congestion.
Steam inhalation
Similar to rinsing the nose with saline solution, steam inhalation is an effective and simple home remedy for treating nasal congestion in newborns. It helps clear the nose, reduce coughing and chest congestion, and provides numerous benefits in treating bronchiolitis in children. Exposing the baby’s nose to steam also thins the mucus in the nose.
Using steam in the bathroom is also an effective way to relieve nasal congestion for babies. Pour hot water into a basin and carefully hold the baby so they can inhale the rising steam. You can also add a small amount of salt for the baby to inhale saline steam, which is equally effective.
Note that, due to the delicate nature of newborns, make sure the steam is not too hot and avoid using herbs with potent odors that may hinder the baby’s breathing. Apply this method every morning and evening before bedtime.
Nasal aspirator
When your baby has a runny or stuffy nose, you can use a nasal aspirator (either in the form of a rubber bulb or two connected pipes) to remove nasal secretions. Clearing the nose helps the baby breathe, eat, and sleep better.
In addition to using a nasal aspirator, it is recommended to rinse the nose with saline solution beforehand to soften the mucus in the baby’s nose before suctioning. Saline solution can be easily obtained from pharmacies or made at home by mixing 1/4 teaspoon of salt with 200ml of warm water. If making your own saline solution, store it in a tightly sealed glass jar in a dry place.
These are some of the helpful tips to assist mothers in quickly and effectively relieving nasal congestion in newborns.
