Nowadays, air conditioners are not just cooling devices in the summer anymore, some models also have heating functions in the winter. These are known as dual-mode air conditioners.

While experts recommend setting the ideal temperature for air conditioners in the summer at around 24 – 26 degrees Celsius, what should it be in the winter? This is a common concern, especially for new households or those planning to use dual-mode air conditioners.

What should be the temperature for air conditioners in the winter?

According to experienced experts in the field of electrical appliances, in the winter, if you use the heating mode of a dual-mode air conditioner, you should set the temperature at around 20 – 22 degrees Celsius. This is the most optimal temperature.

At night, you can increase it to around 24 – 25 degrees Celsius, or even 26 degrees Celsius if there are elderly or young children in the household. Because at night, the outdoor temperature tends to drop and become colder. When people fall asleep, their bodies also need more warmth than during other times of the day.

Many households believe that on cold and freezing days, it is necessary to set the air conditioner temperature as high as possible, which means providing as much warmth as possible. Some households even set it at 30 degrees Celsius or higher. However, in reality, when applied to indoor temperatures, this level of heat is too high.

Even in the heating mode, users should not set the temperature too high (Illustration)

It can cause discomfort and suffocation for members of the household. The skin, eyes, and mouth may become dry in such an environment. In addition, setting the heating temperature too high can overload the air conditioner, leading to reduced lifespan and malfunction in the long run.

If the outside temperature is very cold, below 10 degrees Celsius, it is best to use the heating mode of the air conditioner in combination with other heating devices in the house, such as dedicated heaters or fans.

Just like the cooling mode, when using the heating mode of the air conditioner, users should keep the space relatively closed to ensure efficient and quick heating and prevent energy waste. In addition, additional devices should be used to maintain the humidity balance in the space. When choosing a dual-mode air conditioner, users should consider the space it will be used in to achieve the best efficiency.

Other methods to warm your house in the winter

In addition to using the heating mode of a dual-mode air conditioner or dedicated heating devices to create a warm and cozy atmosphere for your home and family in the winter, here are some other methods suggested by experts:

First, make sure to close all doors, including windows and entrances/exits of the house. If there are any gaps or openings, they should be sealed. This will help prevent cold wind from blowing into the space, and in turn, make the house warmer.

To add extra warmth to your home, you can use thick floor mats. Cleanpedia – a specialized website of Unilever – explains that in general, different types of flooring materials such as wood, engineered wood, or tiles have poor heat retention. Therefore, a thick floor mat helps retain warmth in the space and provides added comfort for users.

Another method to help your house adapt to different seasons, including winter, is to insulate the walls from the beginning. Adding a few scented candles in the house also provides a certain level of warmth. Additionally, it helps create a subtle fragrance in the air, making people feel more comfortable.
