, Người Ở Lại” concluded with a heartwarming finale in its 45th episode.

A happy ending for all

In the previous episode, Lien, Nguyen’s mother, expressed her disapproval of his relationship with An, leading to a tragic car accident. Fortunately, Nguyen recovers and returns home, where Lien realizes her mistake. Despite her son’s pleas, she decides to part ways and heads back to Taiwan.

Before leaving, Lien apologizes to An: “I know that my actions and words towards you are irreparable and have caused you pain. I still want to say: I am deeply sorry.”

Lien also shares her decision to return to Taiwan and entrusts Nguyen to An. She bids them farewell, wishing them peace and happiness.

The relationship between Mr. Binh (NSUT Thai Son) and Quyen (Kieu Anh), Viet’s mother, takes a positive turn as they decide to live together. After visiting a temple, Quyen unexpectedly proposes to Mr. Binh during their prayers. They ride back together on a simple bicycle, embracing a humble yet fulfilling happiness. The romance between Mr. Chinh (NSUT Bui Nhu Lai) and the female architect, Minh (Luong Thu Trang), is also highlighted with a sweet scene of their date in a pink grass field.

The relationships between Mr. Chinh and Minh, and Mr. Binh and Quyen, come to a sweet conclusion.

As for Viet (Thai Vu) and Chi (Thuy Duong), their relationship continues to blossom, but they remain cautious. During their conversation, they unexpectedly encounter Dai (Kien Tran), who turns out to be Chi’s cousin. Taking this opportunity to get back at Viet for previously interfering in his pursuit of An, Dai reveals that Chi has had a long-standing crush on Viet. Chi subtly expresses her feelings for Viet, hinting to Dai: “No need to push, this boat will dock itself.”

In a family meeting, Mr. Binh announces that Quyen and baby Tom will be living with them. The two fathers, Mr. Chinh and Mr. Binh, decide to build a new house. In the meantime, the family moves in with Lien.

The finale wraps up with sweet moments for each couple, leaving the audience with thoughtful words from Mr. Binh. He expresses his and Mr. Chinh’s wish: even though the three children are not blood-related, sharing the same meals under one roof is a blessing. “Even if you want to fly away and build your own nests, this place will always be a peaceful home waiting for you to return,” he tells his children.

The 45-episode journey was an emotional rollercoaster for viewers.

Controversies surrounding the ending

As the finale aired, it sparked mixed reactions from the audience. While some praised the heartwarming conclusion, others had differing opinions. One viewer, , commented, “A perfect and emotional ending.” Another viewer expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you for an amazing show, an incredibly adorable family.”

Cha Toi, Nguoi O Lai stayed true to the original Chinese version, Lấy Danh Nghĩa Người Nhà. An and Nguyen, raised under the same roof by their adoptive fathers, considered each other family. However, their realization and acceptance of romantic feelings for each other sparked debates about moral boundaries.

On social media, some viewers disagreed with the development of their relationship, arguing that despite the lack of blood relation, they were like siblings, and their romance went against traditional values. In contrast, others supported the psychological evolution of their characters and their decision to be together.

The relationship between An and Nguyen sparked debates among viewers.

Prior to the finale, Tran Nghia, the actor playing Nguyen, addressed the context of their relationship to provide a deeper understanding. “If simply living under the same roof, considering each other family, or An calling my father ‘dad’ and me calling her father ‘dad’ is considered incestuous, then perhaps we are viewing life too narrowly through the lens of prejudice,” he stated. He assured that the production team carefully and responsibly crafted the characters’ circumstances.

“I respect differing opinions, but I hope that people will watch the entire story and put themselves in the characters’ shoes before making judgments that may unintentionally hurt those involved and people in similar real-life situations”, the actor added.

While the finale didn’t hold many surprises, some details felt rushed, such as Nguyen and his mother’s farewell, which could have been more emotionally impactful. On the other hand, the trio of Viet, Chi, and Dai provided a comedic break, making it one of the most entertaining scenes in the final episode.

NSUT Thai Son bid farewell with a photo of the “three fathers and sons.” Actress Ngoc Huyen, who played An, also shared her emotions in a letter on her personal page: “So our journey with ‘Cha Toi’ has come to an end! For me, it was an adventure of emotions. It will probably take some time to truly say goodbye to Ha An—a friend with whom I lived, empathized, and loved as if she were a part of me.” She expressed her gratitude to the crew and viewers who loved the film and its characters.
