Can I place a small flower pot on the ancestral altar or should I only use a vase for flowers?

When it comes to offering incense, the Vietnamese people place great importance on flowers and feng shui plants. Normally, on the ancestral altar, we often see flower vases and hydroponic plants, which are branches that bring wealth and prosperity. Can we also place small potted flowers such as chrysanthemums and roses on the ancestral altar?

In reality, very few people place potted flowers on the ancestral altar. First of all, it is because the ancestral altar usually already has utensils for fruits, water, and separate flower arrangements. Moreover, potted plants and flowers are usually heavy due to the soil, so placing them on the ancestral altar would be cumbersome and aesthetically unappealing. The ancestral altar is usually at a higher position, at least one meter above ground level, so placing a potted plant in a high position is not suitable in terms of feng shui.

Potted plants require care and fertilization to bloom. Therefore, in terms of cleanliness, placing flower pots near other offerings is not as hygienic as trimmed flowers placed in vases. If the ancestral altar contains unclean items, it can negatively affect the feng shui and create a negative energy around the altar.

However, at the deity altar, many people place potted plants to attract wealth and luck. Since the deity altar is placed on the ground, small potted plants such as fortune plants, wealth plants, and magnolias can bring both aesthetic beauty and feng shui significance for attracting prosperity. However, people often choose aquatic plants rather than soil plants. This is because planting aquatic plants at the deity altar holds the meaning of gathering water, and water is an element that symbolizes wealth and money management according to feng shui principles.

Decorating potted flowers in the worship area

If you want to offer precious flowers to the worship area and make it more beautiful, you can still use potted plants. However, instead of placing them on the ancestral altar, you can use a small stand or shelf next to the ancestral altar. On the ancestral altar itself, it is best to place flower vases or hydroponic plants.

At the deity altar, you can place potted flowers with feng shui significance, but be careful not to choose pots that are too big and overshadow the deity altar.

When placing flower pots and potted plants on the ancestral altar, pay attention to hygiene and clean the outside of the pots, avoiding any flies or mosquitoes attracted to the plants or any unpleasant odors. The worship area should be clean and free of unpleasant odors.

It is best to only place flower vases on the ancestral altar and the Buddha altar. Potted plants should be placed in areas of the room that serve as decorations and feng shui elements, rather than having any religious implications.

When placing potted plants and flowers in the deity altar area, they need to be carefully taken care of. If using hydroponic plants, regular water changes are necessary to maintain cleanliness. If using soil plants, attention should be paid to proper fertilization and care to ensure cleanliness and avoid withered plants or unpleasant odors.
