Benefits of Pouring Salt Down the Drain
Dissolves build-up in pipes
Salt has the power to dissolve gunk in pipes, especially grease. When pipes are clogged, pouring half a cup of salt, combined with a cup of white vinegar and baking soda, will boost the effectiveness of clearing the pipes.
Eliminates flies and mosquitoes
Salt can prevent the growth of drain flies and even help eradicate them as they thrive in damp, food-rich environments, such as clogged pipes.

Salt effectively prevents the growth of drain flies and helps eliminate them by depriving them of their preferred habitat.
Prevents root intrusion
Salt makes drainage pipes less attractive to roots as they are averse to salt. This helps stop roots from infiltrating the pipe system.
Softens hard water
Salt can soften hard water by releasing mineral ions such as calcium and magnesium, preventing the buildup of grime on surfaces.
Note: Use salt cautiously as it is corrosive. After salting, flush pipes thoroughly to avoid salt accumulation. When using salt to soften water, ensure it doesn’t come into direct contact with the water source to prevent health hazards.
Easy Drain Unblocking with Salt
Step 1: Pour Salt into the Drain
Pour half a cup of salt down the drain. Salt’s corrosive nature helps dissolve blockages.

Pouring salt directly into the drain helps loosen and dissolve the clog.
Step 2: Rinse Pipes with Boiling Water
Boil 2 liters of water and slowly pour it down the drain, directing the flow into the drain to avoid backsplash. Continue flushing with hot water from the tap to clear the pipes.
Step 3: Repeat Salting if Needed (Optional)
If the drain is still blocked after the first attempt, you can try again. Pour another 1/2 cup of salt and rinse with boiling water as instructed in Step 2. Ensure you don’t pour too much salt at once.
Unblocking Drains with Salt and Vinegar
Step 1: Mix Salt and Vinegar
Combine 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of vinegar in a small bowl. Stir until dissolved. Add 1/2 cup of lemon juice and mix well.
Step 2: Pour the Mixture into the Drain
Remove the drain cover and pour the mixture directly into the drain. Cover the drain to allow the mixture to soak thoroughly. Wait for about 15-30 minutes.
Step 3: Rinse the Drain with Water
Boil 2 liters of water and slowly pour it down the drain. Ensure the water doesn’t splash back to avoid accidents. Pour slowly, directing the flow into the drain, to completely remove blockages and clean the pipes.
