Keyholes are a common sight, and something most people will use on a regular basis. If you look closely at a keyhole, you will notice a small hole at the bottom. This is not just a random design feature, but serves an important purpose.
The primary function of the small hole at the bottom of a keyhole is to drain water
The small hole at the bottom of the keyhole allows water to drain out when it gets inside the lock (especially for outdoor locks that are prone to rain). Without this hole, any water that gets into the lock would have no way to escape. Over time, the moisture can damage the internal components of the lock. The small hole drilled into the bottom of the lock provides a way for the water to drain out, thus prolonging the life of the lock. Instead of pooling inside the lock, the water is diverted outside through this small hole.
Prevents rust
Because the small hole at the bottom of the keyhole helps to drain water, it also helps to prevent rust from forming on the lock.
While locks are often made of durable materials like galvanized carbon steel, even with their durable design, it is not uncommon for locks to rust over time. If water gets inside the lock, it can react with the iron and iron-based materials used to make the lock, causing corrosion and rust.
By allowing water to drain quickly through the weep hole at the bottom of the lock, the internal components are less likely to rust and corrode.
Lubrication
Within the body of a lock, there are mechanical moving parts. Over time, these parts can become stuck, making it difficult to open the lock. One way to combat this issue is to add lubrication to the lock.
A small amount of lubricant can be inserted into the lock through the small hole at the bottom of the keyhole.
Alternative lock opening method
The small hole at the bottom of the keyhole can also serve as an alternative method to open a lock (note that this does not apply to all locks, but rather depends on the specific type of lock). For example, in the event of an emergency, such as a lost key, you may be able to call a locksmith to assist you. Locksmiths have specialized tools that they can insert into the small hole at the bottom of the keyhole in order to manipulate the lock open.
