The picturesque town of Sa Pa is renowned for its refreshing climate, delectable cuisine, and plethora of experiences on offer. A year-round destination, it beckons visitors with its unique allure, whether you seek a winter wonderland or a summer escape.
A 48-hour trip to Sa Pa is a great option for travelers from Hanoi and northern provinces, as advised by a VnExpress reporter and Mr. Vu Minh, a recent visitor to Sa Pa in early May.
Day 1
Exploring the Town Center
The Stone Church, square, market, lake, cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops are must-visits for first-timers in Sa Pa. The town center is also a transport hub, offering connections to nearby villages and areas within Lao Cai province.
“Visitors only need 1-2 hours to explore, grab a bite, enjoy a coffee, and shop,” said Mr. Minh.
When in Sa Pa, don’t miss out on the famous trout dishes. With many trout farms in the area, the fish is always fresh, tender, and flavorful. You can choose your trout swimming in the tank, which will be prepared right away. If you enjoy raw fish, go for the trout salad. Otherwise, a hot pot is a great option. Other cooking styles include frying, steaming, and grilling.
Trout in Sa Pa costs around VND 250,000-350,000 per kg, while trout dishes are served in restaurants in the town center and Silver Falls area.
O Quy Ho Pass, one of the four greatest passes in Vietnam, sits on the border of Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces. It’s easily accessible from Silver Falls, and if you’re coming from Sa Pa town, it’s about 10 km away, with an elevation of over 2,000 m.
“The best time to visit is in the late afternoon,” suggested Mr. Minh. On a clear day, you can witness the sunset, but usually, the area is covered in mystical clouds. Each weather condition offers a unique and relaxing experience.
Overnight Stay in Muong Hoa Valley
Muong Hoa, located in Hau Thao commune, about 10 km from Sa Pa town, offers a peaceful escape from the bustling town center. The road to resorts with views of Muong Hoa Valley is convenient, winding along Ham Rong Mountain, just 3 km from the center.
Some accommodation options include Jade Hill Resort, Ville de Mont Mountain Resort, The Mong Village Resort & Spa, Sapa Clay House, and Sapa Rosie House Mountain Retreat…

To learn about the traditional culture of the H’Mong people, the oldest ethnic group in Sa Pa, a visit to Cat Cat Village is a must. Located about 3 km from the Stone Church, the village is easily accessible by car or on foot. You can explore the waterfall, stream, and even try boat riding and traditional costume rentals for unique photo ops.
Cat Cat Village is well-organized as a tourist attraction, with an entrance fee of VND 90,000 for adults and VND 50,000 for children under 1m in height. Free admission is offered to children under 1m.

Alternative Option
If you haven’t been to the peak of Fansipan, consider making it your next destination. The round-trip cable car ride costs VND 800,000 on weekdays and VND 850,000 on weekends and holidays. At the top, you’ll find a mountain train ride and a buffet restaurant. With more time, consider trekking around Ta Van and Lao Chai, known for their picturesque landscapes and ancient stone fields.
