Although he didn’t mention any names, many believe the American billionaire was taking a swipe at Meta, as its suite of social media services, including Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Threads, experienced outages and became inaccessible. Similar to previous incidents, users flocked to alternative platforms like X/Twitter to voice their complaints and seek answers.
This presented an opportunity for the founder of X to showcase the platform’s value in contrast to its competitor. Notably, even Meta’s directors took to this social media network to communicate with their users.
At 11:15 pm, Musk continued the playful jabs by posting a meme from the movie Penguins of Madagascar, featuring the X logo on the commanding character, while the Instagram, Facebook, and Threads logos were depicted as subordinates.

Musk also included a mock announcement from Andy Stone, Head of Communications at Meta: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
The post garnered over 20 million impressions within an hour, along with 20,000 comments and more than 500,000 likes. Most users responded with their own memes, poking fun at Meta’s predicament and emphasizing the role of X during this incident.
Meta’s outage affected users globally for about two hours. Those who relied on Facebook and Messenger experienced unexpected logouts and were unable to log back in. By 11:20 pm, some users regained access, but many continued to face challenges due to forgotten passwords, lack of authentication devices, or not receiving verification codes.
Meta experienced a similar outage in 2021 when its services became unavailable across multiple platforms and regions for six consecutive hours. The company attributed that incident to a “faulty configuration change.” In 2019, Facebook’s web version also suffered a 24-hour outage.
