Why Add Lime to Sugarcane Juice?

According to food technology expert, PGS.TS Nguyen Duy Thinh, adding lime to sugarcane juice does not increase its nutritional value. The sole purpose is to enhance its aroma and add a tangy twist to balance the sweetness of the juice.

Lime in sugarcane juice only reduces the perception of sweetness without lowering the sugar content.

Thinh advised using a small amount of lime as excessive lime juice, especially from the peel and seeds, can make the drink bitter. It is also recommended to add lime just before consumption as it tends to ferment quickly, altering the taste.

“Sugarcane is high in sugar, so it’s important not to overindulge. Two glasses of sugarcane juice per day already meet the recommended sugar intake for adults. As sugar comes from various sources, there’s a risk of excess. Excessive sugar intake increases the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.”

He further advised against drinking sugarcane juice close to mealtimes as it might reduce appetite. Instead, it is best to drink it during breaks or when dehydrated. Sugarcane juice then serves not only as a refreshing drink but also replenishes water and energy levels, aiding alertness.

The Benefits of Sugarcane Juice

Sugarcane juice is packed with nutrients, including saccharose, calcium, chromium, zinc, vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, C), phytonutrients, antioxidants, protein, and soluble fiber. When consumed in moderate amounts (less than 249ml per day), it offers several health benefits.

Fatigue Relief

Research shows that sugarcane juice improves exercise performance and provides hydration and energy post-workout, reducing fatigue. This is attributed to its carbohydrate, vitamin, mineral, and electrolyte content.

Blood Sugar Regulation

With a low glycemic index, moderate consumption of sugarcane juice helps prevent blood sugar spikes. However, excessive intake will increase overall blood sugar levels.

Anti-Aging and Liver Detox

Rich in phenolic and flavonoid antioxidants and vitamins, sugarcane juice limits cell damage caused by free radicals. It also slows down aging, inhibits cancer cell growth, especially in the prostate and breasts, and supports liver health.

Kidney Stone and Urinary Tract Infection Prevention

Sugarcane juice’s diuretic effect helps prevent kidney stones and supports kidney function and urinary tract infection treatment.

Studies indicate that a mixture of sugarcane juice, lemon, and coconut water alleviates the burning sensation in the urinary tract caused by infections, kidney stones, prostatitis, or sexually transmitted diseases. This concoction also boosts immunity and reduces nausea.

Note: It is best to consume sugarcane juice immediately after juicing to avoid bacterial contamination. Diabetics and those on medication should refrain from drinking sugarcane juice. Excessive consumption is also not advised for those aiming to lose weight.
