Chợ Chuộng - Ném nhau cầu may

Chợ Chuộng, a unique traditional fair, showcases a distinct feature: a tomato-throwing event filled with fun and blessings for a fortunate new year. Mr. Nam elaborates on this distinctive aspect, which sets it apart from conventional fairs. Located in Đông Hoàng, Thanh Hóa City, the fair also holds historical and cultural significance for the locals, who wish to develop it into a tourist attraction.

Ms. Nguyễn Thị Thanh Hiền, Head of the Culture, Science, and Information Department of Thanh Hóa City, shares that the city is in the process of creating a comprehensive list and management plan for the fairs and festivals in the area, including Chợ Chuộng, following the merger of wards and communes from the former Đông Sơn district.

Ms. Hiền emphasizes the stringent criteria for a festival to attain recognition as a national intangible cultural heritage, particularly concerning its historical and cultural value, scale, and impact on society.

Known by various names, such as Chợ Chuộng, Chợ Choảng, Chợ Giải Xui, and Chợ Ân Oán, this vibrant fair is held annually on the sixth day of the Lunar New Year in Đông Hoàng, spanning a vast area of 3,000 square meters.

A diverse range of agricultural products are on display, including apples, vegetables, and especially tomatoes, which serve as projectiles in the playful tradition of “throwing for luck.”

Chợ Chuộng - A vibrant fair

Chợ Chuộng attracts a large number of youths who enthusiastically engage in the tomato-throwing tradition, believing that those who get hit by more tomatoes will be blessed with good fortune. To enhance the fun, tomatoes are often crushed before being thrown. Despite the mess, young women participate joyfully, embracing the belief in luck and blessings.

The origin of Chợ Chuộng is steeped in history, with one tale connected to the Lam Sơn Insurrection (1418-1427). According to the legend, the local fair once served as a disguise for the insurgent army, allowing them to evade pursuit by Ming forces. The people of Đông Hoàng commemorate this event annually with a mock battle, preserving this cultural tradition.
