In 2023, Google released its ‘Year in Search’ list, a compilation of the top search trends based on trillions of searches on the web. Known as Google Year In Search 2023, the list highlights nine main topics that reflect the search trends of Vietnamese users. These include “AI Searches”, “Sports”, “Games”, “Travel”, “Cinema Movies”, “How-to Guides”, “Recipes”, “Definitions”, and “Near me” locations. These were the areas that Vietnamese Google users were most interested in during the year.
Artificial Intelligence Takes Center Stage
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been an increasingly hot topic in recent years, and in 2023, the competition among leading tech companies to bring AI applications to end-users gained significant attention. This led to a surge in popularity for AI-related search keywords on Google.
In this search category, a particular phrase topped the list: “the first AI robot made in Vietnam to serve the industry.”
This indicates that Vietnamese users are not only curious about global trends but also prioritize learning about products developed by their own community. The top 10 search terms reflect Vietnamese interests in the benefits of AI, what the AI industry entails, its development, and how to apply AI in specific fields.
Football and Mobile Games Dominate Sports and Games Topics
Football-related searches accounted for 9 out of 10 of the top sports topics searched by Vietnamese users. The first and third positions were occupied by tournaments involving the Vietnamese national football team, such as “AFF Cup” and “2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup”.
The second and fifth positions were taken by “Inter Miami” and “Al Nassr”, the new clubs of football superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, respectively. On the other hand, the biggest sporting event in Southeast Asia, the “SEA Games 32”, only managed fourth place on this list.
Meanwhile, the game-related searches also witnessed a mobile trend, with 9 out of 10 of the most popular searches related to mobile phone games. Among them were “FIFA Mobile” and “FC Online”, reflecting the community’s interest in sports games, especially with the renowned football game “FIFA Online 4” transitioning to “FC Online”.
Domestic Travel and Cinema Continue to be Favorites
Searches for domestic travel destinations accounted for a significant portion of the top 10 locations of interest, making up half of the list.
In terms of international travel, Vietnamese tourists showed a preference for nearby locations with cultural similarities. “Taiwan Travel” topped the list, followed by “Thailand Travel”, and there was also a particular interest in “Bali Travel” and “Singapore Malaysia Travel”.
These five domestic travel destinations are characterized by their natural surroundings and proximity to nature, rather than being located in major cities. Highlights include “Ha Giang Travel”, “Can Tho Travel”, “Phu Quoc Travel”, “Con Phung Travel”, and “Buon Ma Thuot Travel”.
Additionally, the searching community demonstrated a keen interest in Vietnamese cinema, with 6 out of 10 domestic films making the list, such as “Ba Nu’s House”, “Sisterhood 2”, and “The Land of Love”, alongside international blockbusters like “Oppenheimer”, “Avatar 2”, and “Elemental”.
Google Search Bar: The Ultimate Information Hub
The Google search bar remains the go-to tool for information, answering daily queries and catering to the diverse search needs of users across various aspects of their lives. In 2023, the “How-to Guides” and “Definitions” categories reflected Vietnamese users’ information-seeking behavior, especially with topics like “how to make level 2 identification”, “how to apply for a passport online”, and “what is the personal identification number VNEID”. This indicates a deep interest in the administrative policy changes within the country.
Users also turned to Google to stay updated on national hot topics, such as “what is renewable energy”, and paid attention to issues directly impacting their personal health, like “what is botulinum” and “what is respiratory failure”.
The “Recipes” topic showcases the culinary interests of Vietnamese users, especially when it comes to traditional dishes like “banh chung recipe” (Vietnamese square sticky rice cake), “bo kho recipe” (Vietnamese beef stew), and “bun bo hue recipe” (spicy beef noodle soup). The trend of focusing on healthy, homemade food is also evident with searches for “plant-based milk recipe” and “healthy cooking recipe”.
Soursop Tea and Coin Bread Make the Top Searches
Meanwhile, the “Near me” keyword list clearly showcases the daily needs of Vietnamese users when it comes to dining, health, and relaxation.
Users often search for information like “good cardiologist near me”, trending foods like “Coin Bread with Cheese”, “soursop tea near me”, as well as health and wellness services such as “therapeutic head spa near me”. Google Search continues to be the trusted tool for Vietnamese users to find and update the latest information on various aspects of their lives.
