What is electronic identification?

Electronic identification is an account created and authenticated on the VNeID system under the management authority of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam. To register for electronic identification, people use their personal identification number on the chip-attached citizen identification card, along with their personal phone number and email.

In case citizens have not made their citizen identification card, users can completely register when making a new identification card in their place of residence. Electronic identification accounts are usually provided for those who have a genuine need for it, including Vietnamese individuals or foreigners from 14 years old and above, entering or working in our country. For children under 14 years old, their parents or guardians will use their own information to register an account for them.

For organizations, electronic identification will include:

  • Identification code of the organization, Business Registration Certificate number
  • Full name, abbreviation, and English name of the organization
  • Establishment date
  • Location, main operating headquarters
  • Full name of the organization’s legal representative

After citizens register for electronic identification and are confirmed by local authorities, management agencies, please download and use the VNeID application to track personal information that has been integrated into the system such as: Citizen identification card, Driving license, Vehicle registration, Health insurance, and Social insurance. The information is updated quickly and synchronized with the data of the Ministry of Public Security, creating a very convenient electronic citizen identification card.

What is electronic identification used for?

Starting from October 20th, according to Decree 59/2022/ND-CP on electronic identification and authentication, citizens can use electronic identification information instead of the chip-attached citizen identification card to verify their identity at agencies and organizations.

Installing and setting up electronic identification accounts help citizens quickly search and retrieve personal documents when needed. Since this information has been synchronized, it creates convenience for administrative procedures. Citizens and authorities save time processing documents, do not need to carry many complicated documents, and the information is always accurate, reliable, and authenticated by the State. Therefore, organizations do not have to worry about counterfeit documents.

Thanks to electronic identification, citizens can quickly perform daily transactions such as paying electricity bills, water bills, insurance premiums, and bank transfers.

Automating this process through electronic identification not only provides convenience for citizens but also enhances security, information security, confidentiality, and helps prevent forgery.

Conditions for registering an electronic identification account

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Public Security, citizens from 14 years old can register for electronic identification accounts through the VNeID application. For children under 14 years old, they can use the account of their parents or guardians.

To register for an electronic identification account, citizens must provide complete information including:

  • Personal identification number, citizen identification number
  • Passport number, equivalent international travel documents
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Personal phone number and email.
