If any parent is preparing to have a child or trying to get pregnant to have a child in the year of Giap Thin 2024, this may be good news for them. The lunar year of 2024 is the year of Giap Thin, symbolizing the powerful Dragon in Eastern culture.

A study conducted by the National Economic Research Institute surveyed 20,000 students and found that parents of children born in Dragon years often have the belief that their children will be successful.

Two researchers, Naci.H. Mocan and Han Yu from Louisiana State University at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), also collected and analyzed data from nearly 20,000 Chinese children and found that those born in Dragon years tend to have higher scores and a higher likelihood of success.

First, the researchers interviewed 5,000 students randomly selected from 15 universities in Beijing. The year the students took the exams was either 2006 or 2008. 23% of the students were born in 1988, the year of the Dragon. After analyzing the data, they found that under the same conditions, students born in the year of Thin had higher test scores than other students by about 10.5 points.

The researchers then surveyed an additional 112 middle schools in 28 provinces/regions in China. They randomly selected 13,309 students from 438 classes and collected mid-term test scores in Chinese, Mathematics, and English. These students were born from 1996 to 2002, and 23% of them were born in 2000, the year of the Dragon. The students born in the year of Thin had higher scores.

What factors contribute to this?

The researchers surveyed the income and education level of young parents and found that these factors did not affect the children’s scores. They continued to survey the children’s mental health, career aspirations, and found no significant differences between students born in the year of Thin and those born in other years. Therefore, they asked the parents more questions to understand their intentions of having a child in the year of Thin.

Parents have higher expectations for children born in the year of the Dragon

In Eastern culture, the year of the Dragon is often seen as a lucky year. The dragon symbolizes strength, luck, intelligence, and perfection in folk culture. Therefore, parents of children born in Dragon years often have high expectations for their children. They hope their children will achieve success early. Parents who have high expectations and stimulate their children’s development correctly often help their children gain more confidence and a strong desire to learn. Parents who have children born in the year of Thin also tend to invest more in their children’s education to help them develop better IQ.

The researchers’ study also showed that parents’ expectations and support significantly impact children’s confidence, behavior, and performance. Ultimately, parents are the most important people in their children’s development.

How to set expectations correctly?

Setting expectations correctly helps children have better motivation. Dr. Jane Adams, an American social psychologist with many years of family counseling experience, pointed out that parents need to understand the difference between dreams, hopes, and goals, and then determine what can create expectations for their children.

– Dreams are desires or ideal visions, which can be imagined achievements or successes in children’s future.

– Hopes are positive feelings about a certain ability, thinking that something can happen.

– Goals can be quantified and achieved, requiring clear plans and efforts to achieve them.

It is important to note that goals are achievable, dreams are difficult to achieve, and expectations involve making demands on others, which can be disappointing when not fulfilled.

Therefore, parents should consider the following three things when setting expectations for their children:

1. Parents need to analyze their children’s abilities to have reasonable expectations, not just dreams, hopes, and goals of their own. When setting expectations, parents need to respect their children and avoid imposing their own stories and experiences on them.

2. Expectations must be reasonable and achievable, avoiding excessive pressure

If parents’ expectations are too high, it can create pressure and disappointment for both the child and the parent, which is extremely detrimental. Expectations should only slightly exceed the goals so that children can achieve them. Expecting too much can lead to disappointment. Some children may excel in a certain field and progress quickly, while others may need more time and support to achieve a similar level.

3. When communicating expectations to children, parents should pay attention to their expression

How parents communicate expectations to their children is important. If parents speak with a determined and certain attitude and expect their children to achieve, it can create fear and pressure for the child. Good suggestions for parents include: “Try your best and have no regrets!”, “Learn from past mistakes,” “Work hard with a new determination”…

Therefore, if parents are preparing to have a child in the year of Thin, they should remember that they can have expectations for their children but should set them correctly. Otherwise, both parents and children may face failure. Some parents have high expectations for their children in such a way that it can lead to their children feeling pressured, which can ruin their lives.
