The Harmful Effects of Incorrectly Using Bone Broth

Many parents think that giving their child bone broth is beneficial. Simple as they imagine that bone broth is nutritious, rich in calcium and has a delicious aroma that makes it easy for children to eat. Furthermore, since children cannot chew, using bone broth is the best option, and the more bone broth is used, the better.

But in reality, it is quite meaningless:

Bone broth is very low in nutrients:  Bone broth has very little calcium; primarily, it is fat that is released from the bone. Bone broth has very little protein because the protein is still in the meat adhering to the bone. The calcium in bone broth is mainly inorganic calcium which is difficult to absorb. The longer the bone broth is boiled, the more fragrant it becomes, but it also has the risk of harm, as thorough boiling causes nitrites in the bone meat to decompose into nitric oxide, giving it a pleasant smell but also increasing the risk of cancer.

That is why feeding children bone broth regularly makes it difficult for them to digest and makes them lack appetite.

The denser the bone broth, the more it makes children lose their appetite, that is because the denser the bone broth is, the more fat and inorganic calcium it contains. Therefore, children have a harder time digesting, causing bloating, bloated stomach, loss of appetite, and slow bone growth. The animal fats released from the bones are difficult to digest and can cause “heaviness” in the stomach. If the child consumes a lot, they can have a bloated stomach and develop diarrhea.

Eating porridge, starch cooked with bone broth excessively, children only swallow without chewing, and if bone broth is abused while using less meat, fish, eggs, and milk, children are at risk of malnutrition.

Immediate Remedy

You can still use bone broth to cook for your baby, but avoid boiling it too much or for too long to limit the decomposition of nutrients into toxins. Remove the fat scum before using it for your baby. To remove more fat scum, let the bone broth cool in the refrigerator so that the fat layer solidifies and can be easily removed.

Do not only use bone broth; the nutrients still lie in the meat. You should remove the meat, chop it finely so that the child can eat and practice chewing. Our ancestors taught not to eat the poison but eat water, so giving only bone broth to eat is not correct at all.

You should change your baby’s meals, not always cook porridge or starch with bone broth because eating this way will make them feel bored and overwhelmed. You should supplement with diverse ingredients such as shrimp, meat, fish, vegetables, and fruits for your baby.

The frequency of using bone broth is only 1-2 times per week. Do not boil a lot and freeze it as it will reduce the taste. In fact, not using bone broth for your child will not have any impact; it might even be better. In the past, when the economy was still difficult, the whole family only had a little bone for the child, and there were no nutritious foods. So using bone broth provided a small amount of nutrients for the child. But now we have many fresh and delicious foods for children.

The use of bone broth is not necessary in a child’s diet. You can finely chop the meat and cook it immediately with various vegetables for your child to eat.
