As a business professional, I occasionally travel for work. During one such trip, my company assigned me and a female colleague, Huong, to meet a client in a nearby province for three days.
Huong is young, attractive, and has many admirers. However, at work, our relationship remained strictly professional. I never imagined anything special would develop between us.
On the second night of the trip, after finishing our work, I returned to my hotel room to rest. Around 11 PM, the doorbell rang unexpectedly. When I opened the door, I was stunned to see Huong standing there in a sheer nightgown, her hair slightly damp, with a suggestive smile on her lips.

She looked at me and whispered:
– Won’t you invite me in? Just for a little chat.
I’m not naive enough to misunderstand her intentions. If I had agreed, things might have gone too far. My mind raced with thoughts. We were in a remote location, far from anyone we knew, and if something happened, no one would ever find out.
But then, my wife’s image flashed before me. She has always trusted me completely, and I couldn’t betray that trust. So, I firmly replied to Huong:
– I’m sorry. I’m married. I don’t want to do anything I’ll regret.
Huong still tried to smile:
– No one will know.
I partially closed the door.
– I know, and that’s enough. It’s late, you should go back to your room and rest.
After saying that, I politely bid her goodnight and closed the door. That night, I barely slept, not out of regret, but because the incident kept replaying in my mind. If I had given in, even for a moment, I might have ruined the marriage I hold so dear.
At the end of the trip, as I stepped out of the airport, my wife was waiting for me. She smiled brightly and ran to hug me. In that moment, I knew my decision was right.

Last weekend, my wife and I visited her parents as usual. After dinner, her mother and wife went to the kitchen to clean up, leaving me to have tea with her father.
He’s a man of few words, so our conversation was brief. Then, unexpectedly, he got up and went into his room. A moment later, he returned with a large wooden box. He placed it in front of me and said:
– Open it and see what’s inside.
Curious, I opened the box and was stunned to find neatly arranged gold bars inside. My father-in-law calmly explained:
– There are 20 gold bars here. We’re giving them to you both to buy a house. We just hope you’ll live honorably and build a stable life together, so we can rest easy.
I was speechless, unsure whether to accept or decline. At that moment, my wife came upstairs from the kitchen. Noticing my bewildered expression, she laughed. I turned to her and asked:
– What’s going on?
My wife glanced at her parents and slowly explained. It turned out that Huong is the daughter of a close friend of my in-laws. Before the trip, my father-in-law had learned that Huong worked in the same company as me. He had asked her to test my character.
Hearing this, I was stunned. Everything that happened at the hotel that night had been a prearranged test. My wife had only learned about it after it was all over.
My father-in-law looked at me and smiled gently:
– We don’t mind giving you money, but such a large sum can only be entrusted to someone who truly values family.
I sat in silence for a long time. Honestly, when I learned the truth, my emotions were complex. I felt slightly resentful about being tested and broke out in a cold sweat imagining what might have happened if I had given in to temptation.
But upon reflection, if my daughter were to marry one day, I would likely feel the same way my in-laws do now. No parent wants to entrust their wealth to an untrustworthy son-in-law.
I looked at my wife. She was still smiling, her eyes filled with the same trust as always. I suddenly realized that the most precious thing I have isn’t the 20 gold bars in the wooden box, but the unwavering trust of the woman who chose me as her husband.
Money can be earned, and a house can be bought later, but betrayal leaves a wound that’s hard to heal. If I hadn’t stayed strong that night, I might have lost not only my in-laws’ gift but also my self-respect.
Looking back, I consider that business trip the greatest lesson of my life. Some temptations last only a moment, but their consequences can last a lifetime. Fortunately, at the most critical moment, I chose to protect my family’s happiness.
