How to Identify Ripe Durian
Durian is a delicious and nutritious fruit that is loved by many. However, there are some traders in the market who use stimulants and chemicals to ripen the fruit faster, sacrificing its quality. In order to ensure that you are buying ripe and natural durian, it is important to know how to identify it through simple signs.
1. Spines
Ripe durian will have large, firm spikes with a slightly rounded tip. When you squeeze the spikes close together, they will not feel soft. Unripe fruit will have spikes that are sharp and small, and when squeezed, they will feel soft and will not have a sweet taste.
2. Aroma
Ripe durian will have a strong and spreadable aroma throughout the room. Durians soaked in chemicals will not have a distinct aroma.
3. Stem
The stem of ripe durians will have signs of being about to crack, and the vertical segments will be large. Unripe fruit will have a difficult-to-peel skin, and the seller may only peel the middle part for customers to see.
4. Weight
Ripe durian is relatively light in weight compared to soaked durian. Soaked fruit will be heavier due to water inside and thick skin, while ripe fruit will have a thin skin and soft flesh.
5. Stalk
Naturally ripe durians will have a hard and still green stalk. Avoid choosing durians with missing or shriveled stalks, as they may not be tasty or have been harvested for a long time.
6. Segments
The segments of ripe durian will have a shiny yellow color, rich and very soft. Pressed ripe fruit will have less appealing segments, lighter in color, and more sour.
