The Fascinating Akebi Grapes: A Unique Purple Grape Variety

The giant purple grapes found in Japan have a captivating shape that is often mistaken for eggplants. However, these grapes actually have a flesh similar to passion fruit. With their impressive characteristics, these giant purple grapes are now priced at nearly half a million Vietnamese dong per fruit. Let’s explore what makes this grape variety so special!

1. What are Akebi grapes?

Akebi grapes, also known as “Japanese chocolate grapes,” are a grape variety found in the Tohoku region of Honshu Island in northern Japan. They get their name from their flowers, which have a strong fragrance resembling chocolate. Akebi grapes can be grown throughout the year and are typically harvested after 5 to 8 months of planting, making them more commonly available during autumn in Japan.

Each grape is long, measuring up to 10-13cm. What sets them apart is that they do not grow in clusters like other grape varieties in the market. When ripe, Akebi grapes change from green to purple or gray-purple.

The inner part of the grape is white, smooth, and has a jelly-like texture. It is interspersed with shiny black seeds, resembling passion fruit. Akebi grapes are often purchased as gifts due to their unique shape and eye-catching color.

Sellers recommend consuming fresh Akebi grapes with both the flesh and the skin. The flesh is eaten raw, while the skin can be used for processing. Although the skin has a slightly bitter taste, it becomes milder when used in salads or coated in flour and fried. Japanese people also extract oil from the seeds and use the leaves for decoration. Akebi grapes are also suitable for landscaping and home decor purposes.

Many people who have tried Akebi grapes describe them as having a pale and unique taste, somewhat similar to passion fruit but with a hint of distinct chocolate flavor. Additionally, this grape variety contains a high amount of vitamin C and antioxidants, which can promote overall health and improve skin texture.
