What is Lung Cancer?
According to Globocan 2020 (a cancer database by the International Agency for Research on Cancer), lung cancer is a prevalent and deadly disease, both worldwide and in Vietnam. This article from the Tam Anh General Hospital’s website, with professional advice from Dr. CKI Vu Tran Minh Nguyen, sheds light on this critical issue.
Lung cancer is currently divided into two main groups: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). NSCLC accounts for 85% of lung cancer cases and comprises three common pathological types:
Adenocarcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma
Large cell carcinoma.

8 Warning Signs of Lung Cancer
Persistent cough
A cough caused by a simple sore throat or irritation usually subsides within a few days or weeks. However, if you’ve been coughing for more than three weeks with no apparent cause, especially if it’s a dry cough, you’re coughing up blood, or your cough is getting worse despite medication, don’t delay; get checked immediately.
Persistent chest pain
Lung cancer often causes a dull, persistent chest pain that can feel like a tight squeeze or a stabbing sensation, especially when coughing or breathing deeply. This indicates that the tumor may be pressing on the lung tissue or chest wall.
Shortness of breath
Lung cancer impairs the body’s oxygen exchange capability, leading to shortness of breath, even with mild exertion like walking or climbing stairs. If you’re experiencing this without any prior respiratory issues, it could be a serious warning sign.
Prolonged hoarseness
Cancer can affect speech and voice, often causing hoarseness. If you suddenly experience hoarseness without any accompanying sore throat or flu symptoms, and it persists for several weeks, it’s possible that the cancer has affected the vocal cord nerves. This is an important sign that is often overlooked.
Unexplained weight loss
Sudden and rapid weight loss is a visible sign of cancer. The patient may appear emaciated and weak.
Persistent fatigue
Lung cancer patients often experience relentless exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest. This symptom is often overlooked or attributed to stress or lack of sleep, but when combined with other signs, it warrants a health check.
Recurring lung infections
Repeated episodes of pneumonia or bronchitis in a short period are noteworthy, especially if you didn’t have such issues before. A tumor in the lung can obstruct the airways, providing a breeding ground for bacteria. If antibiotic treatment doesn’t resolve the issue, it could indicate a more severe condition.
Bone pain
When lung cancer metastasizes, it often spreads to the bones, causing pain in the back, shoulders, or lumbar spine. Bone pain, especially at night, indicates that the disease has progressed, and immediate medical intervention is necessary.
