Recently, the renowned biomedical journal, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, published a large-scale, 24-year-long study involving over 86,000 individuals aged 60 and above. This collaborative effort between Edith Cowan University (Australia), Queen’s University Belfast (UK), and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (USA) unveiled intriguing findings.
The scientists focused on unraveling the connection between the consumption of flavonoids—powerful antioxidants abundant in black tea—and three crucial aspects of healthy aging: frailty, physical function, and mental health.

A New Reason to Love Tea: Reducing the Risk of Aging-Related Frailty
The results offer a ray of hope: increasing the intake of flavonoid-rich foods, especially black tea, could lower the risk of frailty by up to 15%, physical dysfunction by 12%, and poor mental health by 12%, with more pronounced effects in women.
According to Science Daily, simply adding three servings of flavonoid-rich foods daily (including black tea, apples, citrus fruits, and berries) made a significant difference.
Professor Aedin Cassidy from Queen’s University Belfast, the lead author of the study, shared, “Flavonoids are known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and they help maintain healthy blood vessels and improve muscle strength. These are key factors in preventing frailty as we age.”

Unlike costly medical interventions, experts emphasize the importance of simple dietary adjustments, such as incorporating black tea into your daily routine.
“Our findings suggest that we can combat aging through simple dietary choices in our everyday lives,” emphasized Professor Eric Rimm from the Harvard School of Public Health.
