In 1983, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong joined the UCLA School of Medicine as a faculty member in the Department of Digestive Diseases Surgery and later became the Director of the Pancreas Transplantation Program at UCLA.

After developing a method for treating diabetes by transplanting insulin-producing cells into the patient’s pancreas, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong left UCLA. He founded his own medical research company in 1991.

In 2010, Dr. Soon-Shiong sold the Abraxane Development Company to Celgene for $2.9 billion. He also built and sold another pharmaceutical company, APP Pharmaceuticals, to Germany’s Fresenius for an estimated $4.6 billion. As a result, the net worth of this doctor amounts to $6 billion.
