Calcium in Milk Interacts with Medication
Calcium in milk can interact with medications
The calcium content in milk is high, and when combined with certain medications, it may interfere with their effectiveness. Often, this interaction leads to a reduction in the drug’s effects. Hence, experts usually advise against taking medication with milk.
So, why do doctors recommend avoiding taking medication with milk? Are there any types of milk that do not interact with drugs?

When discussing the interaction between drugs and milk, the fact is that all types of milk, including breast milk, animal milk (such as cow, goat, or sheep milk), plant-based milk (like soy, almond, or corn milk), as well as sterilized and UHT milk, can potentially interact with medications.
Drinking medication with water is most effective
Coming to the most important question: why should one take medication with water? The primary reason is that when you consume medication with water, it has the best chance of dissolving, becoming absorbed into the body. Water does not contain high levels of minerals and nutrients, thus avoiding interactions with the medication and maintaining its effectiveness.
However, there are special cases, such as children or individuals who have difficulty swallowing pills, which make taking medication with water challenging. In such situations, you may need to adjust the method of consumption by dissolving the medication in water to make it easier to swallow. Nonetheless, doctors usually recommend using water to prevent interactions with other beverages.

It is important to note that if you consume dairy products like butter, cheese, or yogurt, refrain from doing so at least 2 hours before and after taking medication. This practice aims to prevent calcium in milk from interacting with the drugs in your stomach or small intestine. After this 2-hour window, calcium will no longer interact with the medication, ensuring its effective absorption without interference from milk.
