In Vietnamese cuisine, dong leaves are essential. Dong leaves are used to wrap special cakes called banh chung. They have a unique flavor that is always present during Tet and whenever banh chung is mentioned. Dong leaves are a type of grass that grows near the water’s edge. They are primarily used to wrap banh chung, providing both a protective layer and a distinctive green color and aroma that cannot be replicated by other leaves.
However, few people know that dong leaves can also be used as a medicinal herb. Fresh dong leaves are typically used for medicinal purposes.
Dong leaves have a slightly sweet taste and a subtle fragrance. They have a cooling effect and are associated with the Liver Meridian, which helps detoxify and cleanse the body.
The medicinal properties of dong leaves include clearing heat, detoxification, diuresis, cooling the liver, and regulating blood circulation.
Usage: Dong leaves are used for wrapping cakes and treating illnesses.
Dong leaves can be harvested year-round, but the peak harvesting period is near Tet (the Lunar New Year) for making banh chung and banh tet. When used as medicine, fresh dong leaves are used.
Some medicinal recipes using dong leaves:
– Alcohol detoxification: Take 100-200g of fresh dong leaves, wash them thoroughly, crush them to extract the juice, and drink it directly. To prevent infection, you can also boil dong leaves and drink the decoction.
– Cooling the body and detoxification: Boil 100-200g of fresh dong leaves with 1 liter of water and drink throughout the day. You can also brew dong leaves like tea and drink it.
– Treating snake bites: Take a sufficient amount of fresh dong leaves, crush them, and apply the residue to the snake bite. The patient should be taken to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment.
– Healing wounds: Take 100g of dong leaves, wash them thoroughly, crush them, and apply the paste to the wound to help stop bleeding.
The dong leaves used for wrapping banh chung have a similar appearance to the dong leaves used to make vermicelli from the plant’s tuber. Therefore, you need to pay attention to these two types. The leaves used for wrapping banh chung usually have a reddish-purple border and do not have a straight midrib like the leaves used for wrapping banh chung. Additionally, most of the medicinal recipes using dong leaves are based on folk knowledge, so their specific effects and level of improvement in diseases have not been scientifically proven. Therefore, for medical conditions requiring the use of dong leaves as treatment, it is recommended to consult a specialist doctor before applying them to avoid any potential adverse effects.
