The climax of the film takes place in episode 8 of Gentle Sunlight, where Bac accidentally witnesses Lan Anh bidding farewell to her lover on the street. Upon learning about his wife’s unfaithfulness, Bac flies into a rage and rushes to confront his wife’s lover, only to be stopped by his neighbors.
Back at the dormitory, Lan Anh confesses to her sister-in-law, Hoa Xuan (Ngoc Huyen), that she had an affair due to financial difficulties and the burden of her husband’s debt. She tearfully explains, “I never intended to leave my husband, but I also need to provide for my child. I know I was wrong.”
However, Xuan strongly disapproves of her actions: “You resorted to cheating to support your family? I’ve never heard such nonsense! You’re relying on another man instead of finding a better solution?”
In episode 9, the conflict escalates as Bac, overwhelmed with grief, gets drunk and passes out in front of his workplace. It takes both Nghia (Duy Khanh) and Xuan to get him into the car and back home. Lan Anh, filled with remorse, tends to her husband throughout the night.
The next morning, Bac wakes up and continues to vomit. As Lan Anh cleans up, Bac snaps at her: “Don’t bother cleaning, it won’t get rid of the filth.” He kicks the bucket and yells: “Get out!”
Lan Anh, unable to contain herself, retorts: “You think I’m disgusting, don’t you? Everything I own, including the newly renovated house in your hometown, was paid for by me. How much do you really earn? You think I’m dirty, but everything you have on you right now is from me.”
Enraged by her words, Bac screams: “Get out and don’t come back!” Their neighbors intervene and advise Lan Anh to stay elsewhere for a few days until Bac calms down.
Online, clips of the couple’s dispute quickly gained traction, reaching nearly a million views within 24 hours. Many viewers expressed their disapproval of Lan Anh’s justification for her affair. Comments such as “You can’t justify cheating on your husband and abandoning your child for financial stability”; “Lan Anh is only thinking of herself and disguising it as concern for her family”; “She hasn’t even apologized to her husband once, and she continues to be condescending even when she’s in the wrong”, reflected the general sentiment.
Both Luong Thu Trang and Duy Hung received high praise for their performances, with Duy Hung’s portrayal of Bac’s powerless anger and betrayal particularly standing out. Thu Trang’s acting, from her expressions to her delivery of dialogue, was also well-received. However, some viewers noted that her appearance seemed altered, with comments suggesting she may have undergone extensive cosmetic procedures, resembling another actress, Le Giang.
When asked about cosmetic surgery, Luong Thu Trang responded during the press conference for Gentle Sunlight: “It is true that I have undergone cosmetic procedures. But what is not true is that people assumed I had work done even when I hadn’t. As an actress, I want my appearance to be limitless, and I want to preserve my youth. I know when to stop, and I only want to enhance my looks, not abuse cosmetic surgery.”
“At times, I made changes, and people still criticized my appearance. So, whether I alter my looks or not, if people don’t like it, they will still criticize. I respect their opinions.”
