Jackfruit: A Tropical Delight Taking the Market by Storm

Jackfruit is taking the market by storm with its delectable sweet and aromatic flavor. Various types of jackfruit, such as chewy jackfruit, honey jackfruit, village jackfruit, Thai jackfruit, and breast jackfruit, as well as jackfruit with red flesh, have become popular choices. Notably, there is a unique type of jackfruit with a small size called “nai jackfruit” that is attracting attention.

Nai jackfruit, also known as forest jackfruit, grows naturally in the tropical forests of the Central Highlands region, such as Dak Nong and Dak Lak, as well as some areas in Central Vietnam. This type of jackfruit retains the characteristic aroma of jackfruit, with an exterior covered in spikes and a vivid dark yellow interior. However, the most significant difference is that it is much smaller in size compared to traditional jackfruits.

Starting from April, the nai jackfruit season bursts into life with sweet, ripe fruits. In the past, this fruit often went unnoticed, falling to the ground untouched. Only occasionally would forest-goers pick a few for a snack or collect the seeds for roasting, but it was never sold in markets. However, in recent years, nai jackfruit has suddenly become a craze among many women, prompting them to search for this fruit everywhere.

According to surveys, the selling price of nai jackfruit currently ranges around 60,000 VND per kg. Notably, nai jackfruit trees often grow wild in the forest and can reach considerable heights. To harvest the fruit, people spread mats under the trees, climb up with ladders, and carefully release the fruit onto the mats before gathering them to transport to fruit wholesalers—a tedious task. For larger orders, women often enlist the help of local Ede ethnic minority people in the harvesting process, and each person can earn a few hundred thousand to a million VND in a day.

Like other common types of jackfruit, nai jackfruit is also rich in vitamins and minerals beneficial to health.
