Thảo quả, also known as ‘đò ho’, is a unique spice native to the mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, including the provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, and Lai Chau. This plant can grow up to 3 meters tall, and its roots resemble ginger rhizomes. The most intriguing part is its fruit, which grows in bright red clusters at the base of the plant.

Each fruit is divided into three compartments, each containing 7-8 aromatic seeds. When dried, the fruit turns a light brown color, develops wrinkles, and is covered with a white coating. After harvesting, the locals dry or roast the fruits. To use, the outer shell is removed to access the seeds within, which contain a pale yellow essential oil with a delightful spicy aroma.

Mr. Giàng from Lao Cai shared that while most people are familiar with the dried form of this ‘queen of spices’, fresh thảo quả can also be used. It is a key ingredient in pho broth and enhances the flavor of coffee, tea, and confectionery.

Thảo quả is nutrient-rich, containing fiber, carbohydrates, protein, Vitamin C, niacin, pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin, and minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and zinc. It also contains 1.5% essential oil. Traditionally, it has been used to aid digestion and treat vomiting, bloating, coughs, fever, and diarrhea.

– Malaria Fever Relief: Grind 20g of thảo quả into a powder, wrap it in a piece of cloth, and plug one nostril an hour before a malaria fever episode to reduce its severity.

– Stomach and Pain Relief: Combine 6g of ripe thảo quả, 12g each of hậu phác and hoắc hương, 8g each of thanh bì and bán hạ khúc, 8g of thần khúc, 4g of cloves, 6g of cao lương khương, 4g of licorice, 12g of ginger, and 12g of jujubes. Boil this mixture into a decoction and drink it warm, once a day, divided into 2-3 doses. This remedy treats abdominal pain caused by cold and dampness.
