A Wedding Day Without a Homeland

Xài’s father, Mr. Pham Van Hoan, her mother, Mrs. Vu Thi Sac, and her older brother, Mr. Pham Ngoc Khai, lived together in Kien Giang. Despite the hardships they faced, the family never had any conflicts.

Around the year 1960, Mrs. Sac gave birth to another child, but unfortunately, the baby passed away. Not long after, Mrs. Sac also passed away, leaving Mr. Hoan as the sole breadwinner for the family. Xài and her brother contributed to the household by working as well.

In 1971, Xài decided to marry and move to the United States with her husband. Little did she know that the day she left her homeland would be a day of destiny, and she would later lose contact with her family.

For a while after moving to the US, Xài maintained contact with her father and brother through handwritten letters. They exchanged addresses and photographs to stay connected. However, a crisis occurred when she divorced her husband, who threw away all the letters containing her family’s address in Vietnam, making it impossible for her to contact them again.

Time passed, and Xài attempted to reconnect with her family, but her economic situation did not allow it. By the time her circumstances improved, she had no information to go on. All hope seemed lost, but surprisingly, just days after sharing her story on the Tuan Vy channel, good news arrived.

An Emotional Reunion

The one who responded to Xài’s plea was her sister-in-law. As soon as she heard Xài’s story, she immediately recognized her and confirmed that it was indeed her sister-in-law. Seeing her sister-in-law on the screen, Xài couldn’t hold back her tears, overwhelmed with emotion at this unexpected turn of events late in her life.

After verifying the matching information and recognizing each other through old photographs, Xài exclaimed, “It’s definitely my family.” Her sister-in-law comforted her and shared that the family had been searching for her for years to no avail.

Through her sister-in-law’s sharing, Xài learned that her family was still living in Kien Giang and, due to the lack of information about her, had lost contact. Hearing about her family’s well-being and knowing that her nieces and nephews were healthy brought Xài great joy, and she promised to visit Vietnam to see them and pay respects to her ancestors after more than 50 years of separation.

The family has been longing for you, and I’ve asked people who went to the US to help find you, but to no avail,” shared the sister-in-law. “We had lost all hope, but when I saw your story on the Tuan Vy channel, I was sure it was you, and I am so happy.”

They reminisced about old times and shared updates about their daily lives. Xài assured her sister-in-law that she would return to Vietnam to visit her family and pay her respects to their ancestors.
