A recent case involving a 48-year-old woman from Chengdu, China, sheds light on an unusual cause of bone fractures. The patient presented with a bone fracture due to calcium deficiency, which was caused by a severe lack of vitamin D.

1. Bone Fracture Due to Overzealous Sun Protection

In a unique case, a 48-year-old woman from Chengdu, China, was rushed to the hospital on May 14 after experiencing a bone fracture. The underlying cause was revealed to be a calcium deficiency resulting from extremely low levels of vitamin D in her body.

Medical images highlighted the patient’s extremely low bone density.

During his shift, Dr. Long Shuang, an emergency room physician at the Xin Du Traditional Hospital, encountered this unusual case. The patient had been avoiding sunlight for an extended period, always covering up from head to toe, rarely wearing short sleeves, and religiously applying sunscreen whenever she ventured outdoors.

Consequently, her body suffered from a severe calcium deficiency, weakening her bones over time. The woman’s bones became so fragile that they couldn’t support her body weight, leading to the fracture.

Tests revealed alarmingly low levels of vitamin D, which accelerated bone loss and resulted in severe osteoporosis.

2. Experts Advise Against Overdoing Sun Protection

Jiang Xiaobing, chief physician of spinal surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, weighs in: “Nowadays, many people go to great lengths to shield themselves from the sun, covering up from head to toe. Our bones regenerate every ten years, but after the age of thirty, we lose about 0.5% to 1% of our bone mass annually.”

Lifestyle choices, such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, further impact bone health. Insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake, coupled with limited sun exposure, can hinder bone strength. It is advisable to refrain from unhealthy habits, quit smoking, reduce alcohol intake, and engage in regular exercise. Additionally, ensuring adequate calcium intake is crucial, especially for individuals over thirty.

Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in bone, tooth, and muscle health. It enhances calcium absorption, indirectly boosting the immune system. However, calcium supplementation is less effective without sufficient vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency is not just linked to bone fractures but also to other health issues such as rickets, heart disease, and even cancer. Beyond sun exposure, vitamin D can be obtained from dietary sources like sardines, salmon, egg yolks, and various meats to prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures.
