In a groundbreaking study published in the medical journal Nature Aging, a team of researchers from Switzerland, France, the US, and the UK, led by the University of Zurich, revealed that a mere daily gram of omega-3 fatty acids can effectively slow biological aging.

According to Medical Xpress, a three-year clinical trial involving 777 participants over the age of 70 shed light on this discovery.

The scientists employed molecular biomarkers called epigenetic clocks to assess how aging rates were influenced by levels of vitamin D, omega-3, and exercise habits.

The Power of Omega-3: Slowing Biological Aging

Participants were divided into eight groups, with some receiving 2,000 IU of vitamin D, 1 gram of omega-3 daily, or engaging in 30 minutes of exercise every three weeks.

Remarkably, the group supplemented with 1 gram of omega-3 exhibited biological ages that were four months younger than those with lower intakes of the fatty acid, and this was evident within just three years of monitoring.

The benefits were further amplified when omega-3, vitamin D, and regular exercise were combined. This trio not only significantly reduced the risk of cancer but also prevented frailty in older adults.

The Omega-3 Group Showed a Remarkable Four-Month Biological Age Difference

This is encouraging news as omega-3 is readily accessible. Found abundantly in oily fish like tuna, salmon, sardines, and herring, as well as shellfish like oysters, omega-3 is also present in seeds and nuts such as flax, chia, and walnuts, and in beans, especially soybeans.
