The Asia Development Conference is the largest forum on growth opportunities in the food, beverage, and nutrition industry in Asia, gathering representatives from over 20 countries, including research institutes, government and non-government organizations, and multinational corporations. The conference focuses on seeking breakthrough scientific solutions to improve the nutrition quality for people in the entire Asian region, especially mothers and children.
Vinamilk is known as the sixth most valuable dairy brand globally (as of 2024). With this position, Vinamilk was invited to attend this year’s Asia Development Conference as the first and only representative from Vietnam to present a thesis on the breakthrough of 6 HMO – a formula that sets the international nutrition standard for infant formula.

This breakthrough of 6 HMO also mimics the precious nutrients only found in breast milk, which play a supportive role in nurturing beneficial bacteria in children’s digestive systems, thereby contributing to strengthening the natural protective barrier.
This product is also one of the rare ones that simultaneously contains DFL and 3-FL – two types of HMO that other formulas usually have in isolation. This unique combination particularly impressed professionals at the conference.
Science Elevates Nutrition Standards Based on Empathy
HMO is known as a precious nutrient exclusively found in breast milk, playing a crucial role in infants’ immune and digestive health. Although there have been continuous improvements in HMO, the Vietnamese market has, for many years, remained at the 5 HMO formula, implying that the enormous potential of this nutrient has not been fully unleashed. “With a spirit of constantly challenging limits, Vinamilk has strived to elevate nutrition standards by introducing Optimum, the first product in Vietnam with a formula containing 6 HMO, accounting for up to 58% of the total HMO in breast milk,” shared Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri, Vinamilk’s Executive Director of Marketing, about the context of this breakthrough product’s inception.

In reality, up to 55% of Vietnamese children are not exclusively breastfed during the first six months of their lives (according to UNICEF 2021), causing them to potentially miss out on the full benefits of breast milk for their digestive and immune systems. Additionally, around 60% of Vietnamese mothers have to combine childcare with work. These physical and circumstantial challenges inadvertently turn exclusive breastfeeding into a concern for many modern mothers.
Therefore, a nutritional solution inspired by the nutrients in breast milk, aiming to accompany and support mothers in confidently taking care of their children and finding happiness in their motherhood journey, is a significant and inevitable need today.
Emphasizing this aspect and wishing to offer equal opportunities for consumers to access the best nutrition, Mr. Shawn Lee, representative of dsm-firmenich Group in the Asia-Pacific region, one of Vinamilk’s six international strategic partners, shared at the conference: “As Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri mentioned, the 6 HMO breakthrough not only elevates the product’s nutrition standards to serve the needs of children but also offers a solution to the modern dilemma of exclusive breastfeeding. Regardless of the circumstances, parents can still provide undivided care and love. We fully agree with this perspective because when parents are happy, their children’s growth journey will also be filled with happiness.”

Opening New Paths and Setting International Nutrition Standards
In its nearly 50 years of development, Vinamilk has invested in researching and successfully producing Vietnam’s first infant formula powder and owning Asia’s most modern formula powder factory, exporting to many countries worldwide since 1997. From a country without a formula powder industry after the war, Vietnam, thanks to Vinamilk’s strategy of investing in science and technology and international cooperation, has made significant strides in infant formula, developing on par with the region, with 6 HMO being a prime example.
Commenting on Vinamilk’s contributions at the conference, Mr. Gary Scattergood, Editor-in-Chief of FoodNavigator-Asia and NutraIngredients (the conference organizer), stated: “We highly appreciate Vinamilk’s contributions to this year’s conference. Vinamilk has offered a unique perspective by combining in-depth research and development capabilities regarding HMO with a profound understanding of local consumers, thereby introducing practical nutritional solutions that meet the health and comprehensive development needs of young children in Vietnam and potentially expanding to the entire Asia.”

Vinamilk’s presence at this prestigious regional forum once again affirms the leading Vietnamese dairy brand’s reputation and influence in the international market. Through its research, production, and constant innovation capabilities, Vinamilk not only demonstrates the remarkable maturity of the domestic nutrition industry but also motivates the Asian market to thrive.
HMO (Human Milk Oligosaccharides) are essential nutrients naturally found in breast milk, playing a crucial role in supporting the digestive and immune health of newborns and infants. The 6 HMO formula developed by Vinamilk aims to mimic the natural HMO composition as closely as possible, accounting for up to 58% of the total HMO present in breast milk. Vinamilk’s 6 HMO formula offers three prominent benefits: Mimics precious nutrients in breast milk, including all three main groups: + Fucosylated: 2’-FL, 3-FL, DFL + Sialylated: 3’-SL, 6’-SL + Non-Fucosylated: LNT Boosts digestive and immune health: The combination of 6 HMO nourishes beneficial bacteria in the infant’s gut, such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, helping to build a healthy microbiota, supporting digestion, and enhancing immunity from the very first years of life. + DFL: Strengthens the protective barrier, helping to prevent bacteria from adhering to the intestinal wall. |
