- Nitrate dissolved in water is usually harmless. However, if water is boiled again too many times, it can convert the dissolved nitrates into nitrosamine – the cause of diseases such as cancer and leukemia.
- A small amount of arsenic in water is not harmful, but a large amount over time can damage the circulatory system and skin. Boiling water again can increase the amount of dissolved arsenic, so it is not advisable to boil water again.
- Boiling water again also increases the fluoride content. If the consumption of dissolved fluoride in water increases, it can increase the risk of bone disorders. Excess fluoride in children under 8 years old can harm teeth and tooth enamel.
- The dissolved calcium in water increases when it is boiled again, which can lead to kidney stones and gallstones.
- Boiling water multiple times alters the chemical properties of the water, resulting in a change in taste and increased concentration of unwanted chemicals and impurities.
- Furthermore, studies have shown that using water boiled again to brew tea can affect its taste.
Experts also advise against using boiled water to prepare formula milk for infants.
