Consuming chicken with basil may lead to nausea, dizziness, and itching…

In traditional Chinese medicine, chicken and basil are considered incompatible. Chicken has a warm and pungent nature, associated with wind and a strong effect on moving wind and fire. Basil, on the other hand, is dispersing and spicy hot. Combining these two can result in a condition known as wind itch.

When chicken and basil are consumed together, you may experience nausea, dizziness, itching, and even full-body tremors.

Consuming Chicken with Basil May Lead to Nausea, Dizziness, and Itching

Our ancestors were cautious when it came to combining different foods. They understood that improper combinations could lead to harmful reactions, ranging from mild stomachaches and nausea to severe food poisoning or even the development of cancer.

There is a saying in Vietnamese: “Chicken and basil are incompatible; eating them together will make your head itch uncontrollably.” This proverb emphasizes the strong belief in the incompatibility of chicken and basil. But is this really true?

According to polyclinic doctor Bui Dac Sang (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Hanoi Oriental Medicine Association), chicken is commonly paired with other foods by Vietnamese to enhance the flavor of dishes. However, combining chicken with basil can induce unpleasant sensations.

In Eastern medicine, basil has a spicy character and helps to lower blood stasis. It is a blood-nourishing and wind-dispelling food. Chicken, on the other hand, has a sweet taste and a warm nature. It helps to warm the middle, benefit qi, and tonify essence and marrow. This combination may lead to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears, full-body tremors, and itching of the head and brain.

Therefore, when consuming chicken, it is advisable to avoid pairing it with basil to prevent any undesirable effects.

Note: If you accidentally eat chicken with basil and experience dizziness or nausea, drink licorice water to detoxify your body.
