First: Wallpaper and Wall Paint
After constructing a house, we often paint the walls or apply wallpaper. However, we should avoid changing the wallpaper or repainting too frequently.
This is because even environmentally friendly paints or standard options contain toxic substances like formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene. While the formaldehyde in this coating usually evaporates over time, it will emit a pungent odor before disappearing, which can be extremely unpleasant.
Excessive exposure to formaldehyde from decorative coatings can lead to a “dizzy” feeling, accompanied by headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Therefore, it is best to avoid frequent changes in wall color or wallpaper to protect your health.
Second: Curtains
Curtains are another item that shouldn’t be replaced often, as most of their colors are achieved through dyeing. Typically, new curtains will have a smell that will dissipate over extended use, likely due to formaldehyde.
In addition to formaldehyde, they may contain other chemicals to prevent fading, which could be harmful to your health. Therefore, when purchasing curtains, opt for high-quality options, and refrain from changing them too frequently.
Third: Mattress
Frequently changing your mattress can also be detrimental to your health. Why? When you buy a new mattress, you may notice an unpleasant pungent odor, which is due to the presence of rubber latex and formaldehyde, especially in low-quality mattresses, where the smell can be more potent.
Since we are in direct contact with our mattress daily, the impact of inhaling these toxic substances can be more severe. The danger posed by mattresses is often significantly higher than that of other objects because of this direct contact, potentially leading to eye, nose, and throat irritation, increased cancer risk, and particular danger to children.
For the well-being of yourself and your family, it is best to avoid regularly replacing these three items. If your mattress or curtains become dirty, you can remove and launder them or use disinfectant sprays. For curtains, consider cleaning them every three months, and for mattresses, semi-annual cleaning should suffice.
If you’re considering changing the decorative wallpaper, give it thoughtful consideration beforehand.
