For generations, there has been a beloved folk tale passed down in Vietnam about the Moon Goddess, Chang’e, and her companion, the Jade Rabbit. The Legend of the Jade Rabbit
Long ago, a pair of rabbits practiced Taoist alchemy and attained immortality, becoming仙 (immortal beings). This rabbit couple had four adorable and pure white rabbit children. One day, the Father Rabbit was summoned by the Jade Emperor, the supreme deity of the Taoist pantheon. As he made his way to the Southern Celestial Gate, he encountered Tai Bai Jin Xing, a prominent star deity, escorting Chang’e under guard.
Intrigued, Father Rabbit inquired about their situation and learned that Chang’e had inadvertently incurred a punishment while trying to save mortals from a dire fate. Father Rabbit felt a deep sense of empathy and compassion for Chang’e’s selfless act.
As he continued his journey, Father Rabbit contemplated Chang’e’s solitary confinement on the moon. He thought: “Chang’e must be lonely and saddened by her isolation. How wonderful it would be if someone could keep her company. My thoughts turn to my four beloved children.” Without hesitation, Father Rabbit turned back home.
Upon his return, Father Rabbit shared with Mother Rabbit the events he had witnessed and his intention to send one of their children to accompany Chang’e. Although Mother Rabbit empathized with Chang’e’s plight, she was reluctant to part with her beloved children, and the children themselves were hesitant to leave their loving home.
Father Rabbit explained to his family that Chang’e’s punishment was a consequence of her brave act of saving others. He posed a question to his children: “If I were the one imprisoned, would you stay by my side? Chang’e risked her freedom to rescue others. Can we not extend the same compassion to her? We must think beyond ourselves!”
Understanding the importance of selflessness, the youngest rabbit bravely volunteered to join Chang’e on the moon. Bidding farewell to his parents and siblings, he embarked on his journey to become Chang’e’s companion.
