If you buy a specific detergent for each surface in your home, sooner or later the number of bottles and boxes will become uncountable. Another thing you should know is that many detergents can handle multiple surfaces. But using just 1 or 2 types of detergent for all surfaces is also a bad idea because you might damage your belongings. Let’s see which cleaning agents should not be used for certain surfaces.
1. Dilute dish soap
If you use too much dish soap, it can have a reverse effect. Some soap will still remain on your dishes and it will take away their shine. And the most unpleasant thing is that soap can get into your body along with your food.
Do not dilute dish soap directly in the bottle as bacteria can appear. It is best to take some water in the sink and dilute the dish soap there. Put 1 teaspoon of dish soap into 1 liter of hot water for dishwashing.
2. Detergents containing bleach are not good for certain surfaces
Many cleaning agents are suitable for everything at home, as they are great for disinfecting and killing various bacteria. But they can damage some materials. Do not clean tiles with bleach-containing detergents as the surface will become dull.
Bleach is also not good for metals. Stainless steel and copper can even react with bleach and produce stains or rust. Also, do not use a rust-removing agent to remove rust stains, as the stain will only become harder to remove.
3. Read the content of furniture polish before using it on wood
Liquid furniture polish comes in 2 types: oil-based and water-based emulsion-type. Both are good at removing dust. But oil-based types have some drawbacks. Firstly, they attract dust. And secondly, the oil will change color over time, turning yellow or even slightly brown, and making the furniture look dirty.
Multiple layers of polish should not be applied to the surface. Polish with oil or wax can leave stains and damage the protective layer of the material. Moreover, they also make the surface sticky and attract dust.
4. Do not buy and dilute bleach-containing detergents in hot water
Many detergents almost keep their effectiveness over time. It is the reason why you can buy a lot to stock up. But this is not true for bleach-containing remedies and any chemicals that contain bleach. Do not keep an opened bleach bottle for more than 6 months as the liquid loses its disinfecting properties over time.
In addition, bleach is not friends with hot water. High temperature destroys the chemicals that make it effective. So, use cold or lukewarm water with this chemical.
5. Antibacterial wipes can damage leather
Antibacterial wipes cannot be used for many surfaces. The liquid they are soaked in has a negative reaction when used on wood. Natural wood loses its shine or the tabletop, the floor can be damaged.
You should also not clean leather items with these wipes. The liquid can evaporate the natural oils of the leather. As a result, the surface becomes dry and can crack.
6. Do not wash carpet stains with dish soap
Although dish soap helps to remove dirt from a carpet or clean some stains, it actually does more harm than good. The remaining part of the liquid is sometimes absorbed by the fibers and makes the carpet sticky. Afterwards, much dirt and dust are absorbed into that spot. It forces you to vacuum the carpet more often.
7. Do not clean wooden furniture with glass cleaner
Glass cleaner is great for many surfaces, but not for wood. The chemicals in the cleaning agent can destroy the shine and varnish. It is best to use a mixture of white vinegar and oil to remove stains and bring shine to the wood surface.
8. “More” does not always mean “better”
If you use too much detergent, you might get the opposite result of what you desired. The excess liquid will still remain on the surface and make it stickier. It not only attracts more dirt but can also become a great environment for bacteria.
The important thing is not only to choose the appropriate cleaning agent but also to use it correctly. Make a paste with a stain for about 10-15 minutes and then start washing. You will spend less effort removing the stain.
