The Versatility of Rice in Household Tasks

Rice water has mild abrasive properties and is ideal for cleaning

Take a handful of rice and place it inside a tall bottle or any glass jar. Pour warm water in and add a little dish soap. Close the bottle cap and shake the rice against the inner walls. By doing so, the starch particles stuck on the rice grains will dissolve in the water. The resulting rice water is useful for the purpose of cleansing, as it acts as a mild abrasive and is ideal for cleaning pots, pans, glass mirrors, as well as mineral deposits on faucets.

For aluminum, iron, and stainless steel pots and pans with stubborn stains, soak them in rice water and bring it to a boil over low heat. After about 10 minutes, remove and rinse with cold water. You will see the stains disappear and the pot becomes shiny again. For mirrors, glass, or faucets dirtied by calcium deposits, just spray the solution on, let it sit for a few minutes, then use a sponge to quickly remove the dirt.

However, rice water alone does not completely clean greasy utensils. The cleaning agent disperses oil and fatty substances with alkaline properties, with a pH level of 8 or above, whereas rice water has a slightly acidic pH of about 6 which is not truly effective for removing greasy residues. Rice water can also be used to soften clothes during ironing.

Rice helps clean grinders, as it can absorb the smell of coffee grounds and other spices

Coffee beans, as well as other aromatic spices (such as garlic, dried onions, etc.), leave an unpleasant odor after grinding. To eliminate this odor, simply add a few grains of rice to the grinder. The rice powder will absorb the lingering smells from coffee and spices while also sharpening the grinder blades.

Drying a water-damaged mobile phone

When a mobile phone falls into water, it is necessary to remove all the water from the device to prevent damage to the internal circuits. At this time, you need to turn off the phone immediately, then place it in a bag filled with rice. Rice has excellent moisture-absorbing capabilities, so it will help draw out any water droplets trapped inside the phone, minimizing any potential damage.

Rice purifies the air

Rice has the ability to absorb unwanted odors, as well as moisture in any confined space. Just fill a jar with rice and add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Cover the jar with a piece of fabric for air circulation. Placing the jar in the laundry room, wardrobe, or bathroom will effectively purify the air and create a fresh living space.

Making a hot compress

After a tiring day at work, if you have a sore and discomforted neck and shoulders, you can easily make a hot compress using rice. Fill a fabric bag with rice in the shape you prefer, then microwave the bag for about 30 seconds, and voila! You have a hot compress to relax and massage your sore areas.

Ripening fruits

Bury green fruits deep within a box of rice, and within a few days, they will ripen and turn yellow. The reason is that rice boxes are extremely effective at retaining ethylene, which helps accelerate the ripening process of fruits. This is a popular method used to ripen various types of fruits: bananas, avocados, mangoes, persimmons…

Preventing silver from tarnishing

Silverware usually needs to be polished in order to maintain its brightness. If you place a cupful of rice inside a cupboard containing silverware, the rice can absorb moisture and slow down the oxidation process, prolonging the time between polishing the silverware.
