A cutting board is a common item used in every kitchen. However, improper cleaning of the cutting board can lead to hidden bacteria that can pose a threat to the health of your family. Learn the following ways to clean your cutting board to ensure it is thoroughly sanitized!
To clean it daily, you will need 2 small spray bottles to hold white vinegar and a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (available at pharmacies).
Daily Cleaning:
After cutting vegetables, fruits: After using the cutting board to prep vegetables and fruits (not meat), use a damp cloth to remove any food debris left on the board, then spray the surface with vinegar and wipe it dry with a clean kitchen towel. Vinegar is an effective disinfectant, like acetic acid contains combats E.coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus.
After cutting meat and poultry: Use a wet paper towel to wipe away any leftover food debris, then clean with vinegar as when cutting vegetables and fruits. Then spray a layer of 3% hydrogen peroxide on the entire surface, leave the solution on for 2-3 minutes, then wipe it with a wet paper towel. Let the cutting board air dry. Hydrogen Peroxide is a champion in killing bacteria, so when combined with vinegar, they help to effectively eliminate bacteria. This is especially important in the case where your cutting board is cracked, as regular cleaning with water cannot thoroughly clean the nooks and crannies. Using vinegar and hydrogen peroxide will ensure that your cutting board is properly disinfected.
Your cutting board is used and cleaned daily, but it also needs to be cleaned more thoroughly on a monthly basis.
To do this, add 4-5 drops of dish soap to a bowl of cold water and use a stiff-bristle brush to gently scrub the surface.
Move the brush in small circular motions.
Afterward, wipe the surface with a damp, clean cloth and finish off by using a dry cloth to thoroughly dry the cutting board.
Note: if you have to wash the cutting board with soap and water, never immerse the entire board in the water. Instead, use a cloth or sponge dipped in soapy water and wring out the excess water before wiping directly onto the cutting board surface. Then let the board air dry along the grain. This method will minimize water seeping into the wood before it evaporates, which is a cause of bacteria hiding more deeply in the board, becoming a hazard.
If you clean your cutting board daily, it won’t have any unpleasant odor, but if you have just cut onions or minced garlic, it can retain an undesirable smell, which can even cling to the food you cut afterwards. This is a way to remove odors.
First, wash the board as in step 1, then rub the surface with fresh lemon juice. The simplest way is to cut a lemon and rub it on the cutting board surface
but you will need to wipe off any lemon pulp on the surface before the cutting board is dry.
A well-used cutting board often becomes discolored, looks old and worn, and even loses its hygiene. But don’t worry, there’s a way to transform your old cutting board into a brand new one in an instant.
Mix a combination of: 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 tablespoon water.
Then dip a clean cloth into this mixture and gently scrub the cutting board surface along the grain. When finished, wipe the surface with a damp, clean cloth.
Finally, use a dry cloth to wipe it again. Your old cutting board now looks like new!
