Every year, when spring comes, the “specialty” of the North – damp weather – returns and becomes a nightmare for many people. This weather leaves the floor constantly wet, with walls sweating and even emitting a unpleasant odor, causing inconvenience to the daily lives of many families.
Not only that, if not dealt with in a timely manner, the walls can be affected by mold or paint peeling, and the furniture can easily be damaged. Many people resort to continuously turning on fans or keeping doors wide open to let fresh air in, hoping that the wind will quickly dry the house. However, this method only worsens the dampness in the house.
The reason is that the cold air from the fans causes the moisture in the air to condense more, resulting in more water retention and a slower drying process. On the other hand, if you open the doors, the wind will bring in more humidity, causing the house to become even more damp. Instead, you should follow the methods below to effectively combat dampness in the house:
Keep doors closed and bathroom doors shut
As mentioned above, keeping doors wide open only worsens dampness, so the first rule is to keep doors closed. Additionally, it is important to keep bathroom doors shut, as this area is often the most humid in the house. Closing the bathroom door after use prevents steam from escaping and making the floor damp. Also, remember to turn on the exhaust fan in the bathroom to remove the humid air outside.
Clean the house with dry towels
During damp days, it is advisable to limit cleaning the house with water, as it not only does not clean the floor but also makes it even more wet and sticky. It is best to use dry, clean towels to wipe any water on the floor. If you really need to mop the floor, make sure to wring the mop out thoroughly and immediately use a dry, clean towel to wipe any remaining moisture.
Turn on the air conditioner in dry mode
If you have an air conditioner, turn it on in dry mode to help remove moisture from the air. This method is considered the most effective in combating dampness. Moreover, when the air conditioner is on, the air circulation inside the house is improved, ensuring the health of all family members.
Use moisture-absorbing materials
There are many boxes/bags of moisture-absorbing agents available on the market. You can purchase them and place them in corners around the house to absorb excess humidity. If you have charcoal or live lime (about 10-15kg), you can also place a bowl of them in a corner of the room or under the bed to absorb moisture. Note that you should only place them inside the house and not burn the charcoal.
Other considerations for damp houses
– To avoid the odor caused by damp weather, you can place some scented essential oils in corners of the house or burn orange or pomelo peels to create a pleasant scent.
– Avoid placing electronic devices such as TVs, phones, computers directly on the floor or against the walls to prevent moisture from seeping into them and causing damage or electrical issues. It is best to place these devices at least 1m above the ground and about 10-15cm away from the walls.
– Limit doing laundry on damp days and avoid drying clothes with a fan, as they will take longer to dry and may emit an unpleasant odor.
– Bamboo and wooden utensils such as chopsticks, mosquitos repellent, bowls, etc. should be washed with hot water and dried before storing to prevent mold growth.
