When comparing vertical washing machines and horizontal washing machines, you will easily notice that vertical washing machines do not have a cover and the water does not splash out, but the steam is still easy to evaporate. Because of this, the moisture inside the washing tub is not large enough to cause mold issues. Opening or closing the lid of a vertical washing machine has the same effect.
However, horizontal washing machines have a significant difference because the door of the washing machine is covered with a solid cover and a rubber lining. This rubber lining helps prevent water from spilling out of the washing tub. But this advantage is also a disadvantage. The environment inside the horizontal washing machine is already closed, and the rubber lining of the washing machine restricts the circulation of air.
This is a perfect environment for mold growth and harmful to your health. Not to mention the clothes will have a musty smell due to mold in the washing tub. Therefore, when not using the washing machine, remember to take an extra step: open the washing tub door to allow air circulation inside the washing tub and eliminate the unpleasant moisture.
Some houses have limited space, which can make it difficult to open the washing machine door. But you can completely solve this problem by partially opening it for air circulation. However, it is also important to note that if there are young children in the house, while still opening the lid after washing, close and lock the child safety lock to prevent the child from being mischievous and suffocating due to lack of oxygen.
If your washing machine has a musty smell, you can handle it as follows:
– Take a soft cotton cloth, wet it with vinegar, then wipe the machine shell clean.
– Pour about 2 cups of vinegar or lemon water into the washing drum, then run a complete washing cycle in the hottest water mode to eliminate odor, dirt, or detergent residue.
– Pour vinegar into the washing tub
– You continue to rub around the edges of the lid/door with vinegar-soaked cotton cloth to remove any remaining mold, dirt, or detergent residue.
– Remove the detergent compartment and fabric softener dispenser, scrub them clean in a basin of water. After drying this compartment, reinstall it in its original position.
If the washing machine has a musty smell due to mold, do the following:
To completely eliminate the musty smell in the washing machine, you can use a cleaning solution or mix vinegar and baking soda, then start the washing mode without clothes to clean the machine. However, this is only a temporary solution. If you want to completely eradicate stubborn mold stains, you can follow the steps below:
Step 1: Unplug the power cord to ensure safety.
Step 2: For top-loading and front-loading washing machines, there will be different areas prone to mold:
For front-loading washing machines, use a paper towel to wipe the rubber lining around the door frame. First, wipe the outside, then turn it over and wipe the inside. For top-loading washing machines, use a sponge (dishwashing sponge) to scrub the remaining dirt in the soap container along with the detergent dispenser, then wipe the surface of the machine with fabric or paper towels.
After completing these 2 steps, you have eliminated a lot of dirt that causes mold. However, to completely eliminate this musty smell, follow these steps:
Step 3: Replug the washing machine, then adjust the temperature to the hottest and the longest washing cycle.
Step 4: Pour 2 cups of vinegar into the pre-prepared cleaning tray. Then, let the machine run a complete cycle without clothes.
Step 5: After completing the cycle in step 4, continue to run another cycle (also at the highest temperature and longest time) with 2 cups of cleaning solution.
After completing these steps, your washing machine will be completely clean and free of musty odor.
