1. Lemon Eucalyptus
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified lemon eucalyptus, a mosquito repellent registered with the EPA, as an active ingredient in mosquito repellents. In a study published in June 2014 in the journal Fitoterapia, lemon eucalyptus oil was found to provide 100% protection against mosquitoes for up to 12 hours. This makes it a highly effective insect repellent. However, it is important to note that it should not be used on children under the age of three. Additionally, lemon eucalyptus also helps reduce common cold symptoms, such as nasal congestion and cough.
2. Catnip Oil
What most people know about catnip oil is its common effect on cats. However, it can also be used as an herb. And research has shown that it can also be used to repel mosquitoes. The scent of catnip repels mosquitoes but is pleasant for humans.
According to the Oregon Health & Science University, peppermint oil is a natural insecticide and a very effective mosquito repellent. Peppermint oil can be mixed with other fragrances, such as lemon, lemongrass, and applied to the skin for a peppermint scent. However, it is important to note that peppermint oil is a hot oil and can cause a warming sensation when directly applied and can cause rashes on the skin. Therefore, when diluting, be sure to dilute or use other accompanying oils.
4. Lemongrass Oil
According to a study published in July 2016 in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and World Pharmacology, lemongrass oil can be comparable to popular mosquito repellents. Combining lemongrass oil with another essential oil (such as cinnamon bark oil) will make its repelling effect stronger.
5. IR3535
IR3535, a synthetic amino acid, is one of the most common active ingredients in insect repellents. Insect repellents containing IR3535 are mainly in the form of lotions and are available at most pharmacies. This amino acid disrupts the olfactory system of insects and is an excellent repellent. The special thing is that this amino acid is non-toxic and protects you from mosquitoes for 8 hours.
6. Use a Fan
A small portable handheld fan can make you more comfortable when outdoors on a hot summer day. So, bring an electric fan to repel mosquitoes and cool your body.
7. Eliminate Standing Water
Any pool or water puddles around your house or yard can quickly become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. A tip to keep the area around your house well-ventilated and clean to limit mosquitoes: Unclog roof gutters, make sure rainwater doesn’t accumulate in the trash can lid, turn flower pots upside down or any unused containers, etc…
