Cooking large amounts of rice and then throwing it away is wasteful, but eating cold rice is neither tasty nor healthy.
According to nutrition experts, eating rice that hasn’t been properly stored can lead to food poisoning. Many of us may be guilty of some of the common habits that contribute to this.
In this article, Bach Hoa XANH will share some tips on how to prevent rice from spoiling during this summer!
Did you know?
The lid of an electric rice cooker is often the least cleaned part, especially for those with a locking lid.
If you don’t clean the lid properly, steam and rice residue can build up and cause the cooked rice to spoil faster. So, remember to thoroughly clean the lid when washing your rice cooker!
Not cleaning the lid of your rice cooker can lead to faster spoilage.
1 How to Prevent Leftover Rice from Spoiling
According to PGS.TS Nguyen Van Hoan, former Director of the Rice Research Institute, to keep rice from spoiling for longer, you can try the following methods:
Reheat the Rice After Eating
Plug in the rice cooker and press the cook button for about 2 minutes before unplugging it and storing the rice. This is because bacteria from chopsticks, spoons, or other foods can get into the rice during mealtime.
However, when you plug in the rice cooker, the temperature reaches around 80°C, killing the bacteria. This makes the rice less prone to spoilage and safer to consume.
Store in the Fridge
A more common and quicker method is to store the rice in the fridge. Put the leftover rice in an airtight container and place it in the fridge. When it’s mealtime, simply reheat it. Don’t keep the rice in the fridge for more than 24 hours, as it may start to ferment and become inedible.
Store in a Cool, Ventilated Area
Alternatively, you can store leftover rice in a cool, well-ventilated area. Make sure other foods don’t come into contact with the rice. Simply leave the rice uncovered in a cool place, but don’t keep it in a sealed container or the pot, as the steam will cause it to spoil faster.
2 Tips for Cooking Rice to Prevent Spoilage
Before Cooking
To cook delicious rice that lasts longer, clean the pot and lid thoroughly before cooking, paying attention to any rice residue at the bottom and on the lid.
If there’s mold, rinse the rice thoroughly and change the water multiple times. To ensure your rice is tasty and lasts longer, get into the habit of rinsing the rice. About 2 hours before cooking, rinse the rice and let it drain in a sieve.
You can also add a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice to the rice cooker to enhance its antibacterial properties and prevent spoilage.
After the Rice is Cooked
Once the rice is cooked, use chopsticks or a spoon to fluff it up gently. This will keep it tasting great and lasting longer.
3 Ways to Reheat Leftover Rice
Using a Rice Cooker
First, put the leftover rice in a bowl and add a small amount of water to the rice cooker. Place the bowl of rice inside and press the cook button. In just a few minutes, your rice will be hot and taste like it’s freshly cooked.
Using a Microwave
Simply put the leftover rice in a microwave-safe bowl and cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Pop it in the microwave to reheat. The rice will come out tasting great and won’t be dry.
Alternatively, you can use a steamer basket to reheat the rice. Don’t forget to add a pinch of salt to the water for extra flavor.
These are some tips and tricks to keep your rice tasting fresh and prevent spoilage during the hot summer days. Remember these hacks to avoid waste and take care of your family’s health!
