Characteristics of Azaleas

– Azalea trees have a rugged, slender shape, with a rough bark and a height of approximately 50-200cm.

– The leaves are a deep green, oval-shaped, and grow in an alternating pattern, tapering towards the tip, and are usually about 1-2cm long.

– Azalea flowers consist of many curled petals arranged in layers, and they have a subtle, pleasant fragrance. Moreover, this flower comes in a wide range of colors such as purple, red, pink, white, and more.

2The Legend of Azaleas

You may not know that behind the graceful beauty of azaleas lies a touching legend. The story begins long ago, with a happily married couple. The husband often hunted and chopped wood in the deep forest, but one day, he ventured into the forest and never returned.

The wife waited month after month but received no news of her husband. So, she decided to venture into the forest to search for him. However, as fate would have it, just as she left, her husband returned home.

The wife searched for her husband in vain, and eventually, she collapsed and died beside a rock. A flower with a sweet fragrance grew from where she lay. The story moved the fairy so much that he named the flower “Do,” which means “to wait” in Vietnamese.

The Legend of Azaleas

The husband, upon returning home and not finding his wife, also went into the forest to look for her. He, too, was unable to find her, and after days of searching, he collapsed and died on the same rock.

After his death, the husband’s spirit transformed into a bird, singing every day in search of his wife. The fairy, touched by their story, named this bird “Quyen,” which is the reverse of “quen,” meaning “to forget.”

From then on, azaleas came to be known as “hoa do quyen” in Vietnamese, with the hope that the couple would be reunited in happiness.

5Planting and Caring for Azaleas

Originating from temperate regions, azaleas thrive in cool climates. However, with the following techniques, you can make your azaleas bloom beautifully all year round.

Planting Azaleas

Step 1 Choose Azalea Varieties

There are numerous azalea varieties available today, but if you’re in Vietnam, opt for Belgian azaleas as they are the most popular and easiest to grow.

Belgian azaleas are small, produce abundant flowers, and can even bloom in two colors, making them very eye-catching. For indoor planting, consider propagating through cuttings or layering for faster results than seed germination.

Step 2 Select the Right Soil

Azaleas thrive in acidic soil with a pH level between 4 and 5. You can use soil rich in humus, airy and loose, and mix it with decomposed pine or spruce needles.

Step 3 Choose a Pot

Select a shallow pot with large drainage holes at the bottom and a wide opening to allow for quick water drainage and evaporation.

Step 4 Planting Process

Line the bottom of the pot with a plastic sheet, then add a 2-3cm layer of gravel or pebbles. Fill the pot with soil up to about half or two-thirds of its height.

Place the prepared cutting into the pot, ensuring the roots have room to spread out, and gently pack the soil around it. When the roots reach the bottom of the pot, repot the azalea into a larger container with the same type of soil.

Techniques for planting and caring for azaleas to ensure year-round blooms

Caring for Azaleas

– Water the plant with a spray bottle once or twice in the early morning or late afternoon, increasing the amount of water during bud formation and flowering.

Before the plant sprouts, only moisten the soil. After two weeks, use rice or bean water for watering. Additionally, once a month, apply a 5-10% solution of iron sulfate to prevent leaf yellowing.

Begin fertilizing when the plant is 2 years old.

+ For 2-3-year-old plants, apply diluted fertilizer twice a month in late spring or summer.

+ For plants older than 4 years, apply dry fertilizer twice a year in spring and summer. In mid-June, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and stop fertilizing after June to encourage flowering.

– Prune yellow, diseased leaves and branches, and consider pinching, bending, and shaping the plant to enhance its aesthetic value.

– Control pests and diseases such as mealybugs, spider mites, root rot, brown spots, and leaf yellowing by purchasing suitable pesticides and fertilizers from a gardening store. The staff will be able to provide more specific advice.
