British scientists have discovered that caffeine in coffee or tea can reverse important “cellular switches.”

A cup of coffee will energize and invigorate you as you start your day. Over time, making this a daily habit will leave you feeling consistently energized and youthful, according to a new study.

The authors from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and the Francis Crick Institute in the UK used fission yeast as a substitute for human cells.

Using these substitute cells, they analyzed how caffeine dosage affects cellular longevity and resilience.

According to Science Alert, previous research has discovered that caffeine can operate a biological switch called TOR, which helps regulate cell growth in response to food and energy availability.

With the latest experiments, researchers determined that caffeine does not directly interact with TOR. Instead, it controls TOR through the AMPK pathway.

AMPK is an extremely important biological signaling pathway in cells, acting as an “energy sensor” or “fuel gauge,” maintaining cellular function and helping them resist wear and tear.

When caffeine influences TOR through the AMPK enzyme, it affects cells in three ways: how they grow, how they repair DNA, and how they respond to stress.

All of these impacts are positive, contributing to the long-term health of the cells.

This mechanism suggests that regularly “charging” ourselves with caffeine can facilitate healthy aging, helping us maintain our energy levels, feel youthful, and reduce the impact of chronic illnesses as we grow older.

The finding also provides further evidence that regularly consuming caffeine-rich beverages like coffee, tea, and cocoa is a healthy habit.
