Frequently asked questions

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a popular and important festival celebrated by Vietnamese and Chinese people. It occurs on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is a time to celebrate the abundance of the autumn harvest moon and is also associated with reunion and harmony within families.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, people often enjoy moon worship, lion dances, carrying colorful lanterns, and eating mooncakes. Lion dances are believed to bring good luck and fortune, while the lanterns symbolize the harvest moon and bring light to the dark night.

Mooncakes are considered indispensable during the Mid-Autumn Festival. These pastries are often round or square and feature a dense, sweet filling. They are traditionally imprinted with the pattern of the moon or the word for ‘longevity’ in Chinese characters. Mooncakes are exchanged between friends, family, and business associates as a way to express best wishes and maintain harmonious relationships.

In 2024, the Mid-Autumn Festival will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 18. According to the current labor law, there will be one day off for the festival itself. However, as it falls close to the National Day holiday on September 2, there is a possibility that the two holidays could be combined to create a longer vacation period.
