For many Vietnamese, mugwort is a herb with numerous beneficial properties. Not only is it used as a culinary herb with a distinct aroma, but it is also valued for its medicinal properties in traditional medicine.
1 Why is Mugwort Effective Against Covid-19?
A scientist from Massachusetts, USA, suggests that mugwort could be a potential treatment for Covid-19 patients.
Professor Pamela Weathers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, along with her research team, discovered that extracts from sweet wormwood leaves can inhibit the replication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its two variants.
According to Professor Weathers, mugwort has been used for thousands of years to help reduce fever and, more specifically, to combat malaria. While it is not commonly found in the US, this herb is abundant in many other parts of the world, especially in regions prone to malaria.
The scientists tested a method of soaking dried mugwort leaves in hot water from four continents against SARS-CoV-2 and its two variants (identified in the UK and South Africa). Remarkably, some of the leaves, aged up to 12 years, still exhibited potential antiviral properties.
The research findings indicate that while mugwort extract cannot prevent the virus from entering cells, it does impede the virus’s ability to replicate, ultimately killing it.
Human trials are currently underway with Covid-19 patients to determine the method’s effectiveness. The scientists hope that the trials will yield positive results, leading to approval from the FDA for safety and efficacy, which are of utmost importance.
