Although Vietnam is the second largest coffee exporter in the world, the coffee you drink daily is likely to be blended with inferior substances. While this practice reduces the cost of coffee, it also compromises its quality compared to pure coffee.

1 What is Pure Coffee?

True to its name, pure coffee is composed of 100% coffee beans, excluding additives, flavor enhancers, or fillers such as burnt corn, soybeans, etc.

Pure coffee boasts distinctive flavors and aromas that vary across different types, poses no health risks, and is priced higher than blended coffee.

2 How to Distinguish Pure Coffee from Blended Coffee?

Avid coffee enthusiasts can often identify pure coffee just by its aroma. However, there are other ways to determine whether your coffee is pure or blended with inferior substances.

Coffee Aroma and Color: Pure coffee, when brewed, exhibits a transparent, brown-hued liquid, although the shade may vary depending on the roasting technique. Nonetheless, it lacks the deep black color typical of regular coffee. Moreover, its fragrance is subtle rather than overpowering.

Coffee Powder Color: After undergoing processes like roasting and grinding, pure coffee powder should be deep brown rather than black. Coffee blended with soybeans, for instance, tends to be muddy yellow-brown.

Taste and Texture: Apart from its signature bitterness, pure coffee, especially Arabica, offers a subtle tangy taste. The bitterness is mild rather than sharp, and a hint of sweetness can be detected when savored slowly.

Weight: Pure coffee has a lower specific gravity than blended coffee. To compare, hold two packages of coffee with equal weight; the one that feels fuller and contains more coffee is likely purer.

Fluffiness: Due to its lower specific gravity, pure coffee powder is lighter and fluffier. When added to water, it floats on the surface, whereas blended coffee with added grains sinks to the bottom.

Moisture Content: Blended coffee with a high caramel content to enhance color tends to be moister and more prone to clumping. In contrast, pure coffee is characterized by its dry, fluffy texture.

Even if you’re not a coffee connoisseur, you can still identify pure coffee using these simple methods. So, keep these characteristics in mind the next time you shop for coffee, and savor the captivating and refined flavors of pure coffee.
