To save on electricity bills as well as prevent fire hazards, users should disconnect multiple electronic devices when they are not at home, such as when traveling. However, there are electronic devices that always need to stay connected to power.

Which electronic devices should not be turned off when away from home for a few days?
To ensure the safety of the house, individuals, or the devices themselves, you need to remember which electronic devices should or should not be turned off when away from home for a few days. Devices that need to stay connected to power include:

Surveillance cameras
With security cameras or any devices related to security such as flood sensors, gas sensors, fire sensors, motion sensors… you need to keep them on when away from home.

Make sure to not turn off these devices, as it may compromise your security. They are essential when the house is vacant. You must always find a way to maintain power for them even when the rest of the house has no electricity.

Refrigerator
This is undoubtedly one of the highest electricity-consuming devices in every family, but you always need to maintain power for it. The refrigerator plays the role of preserving and storing many types of food, especially fresh food, so it is best not to unplug it.

Turning off the refrigerator can lead to damage to its components, cooling capacity, and durability. Cutting off power for a long time will cause oxidation, corrosion, and create an environment that promotes the growth of bacteria and mold, resulting in unpleasant odor and extra cleaning work.

Router
A router helps share the internet connection to various other devices within the same network. The router is closely related to modern connected devices. It allows home automation devices such as smoke sensors, security cameras to function.

If you disconnect the router from the power source, the devices will stop working and you will not be able to control them remotely. Therefore, it is one of the electronic devices that should not be turned off when away from home.

When you go on a long trip, you should determine a good location for the router. Avoid placing it near windows with direct sunlight or where it can get too hot to ensure stable operation and prevent any issues that might cause it to stop working.

Electronic devices that should be unplugged when away for multiple days
When you are away from home for about 2 days or more, you should unplug most of the electrical devices in the house. For devices that cannot be unplugged, you can turn off the circuit breaker.

Kitchen appliances
Kitchen appliances that can be completely unplugged without affecting their future operation include dishwashers, microwaves, ovens, electric rice cookers, or electric kettles. For families using electric stoves with circuit breakers, remember to turn off the circuit breaker.

Entertainment system
The most energy-consuming devices in households are often those related to entertainment systems. These may include speaker systems or large-screen, high-resolution televisions. Many people only turn off these devices using the remote control, but that is not enough.

In this case, the devices are not completely disconnected from power but are instead in standby mode, still consuming about 24W of electricity per day. You should not abruptly unplug the power cord of these devices but turn them off using the remote control first, then wait for a while before unplugging the cord.

Charging cables
Many households have the habit of “forgetting” to unplug charging cables after charging their phones. This not only wastes electricity but also poses the risk of electrical faults or even explosions.

Charging cables operate like a transformer, and the power consumption can be even higher if the circuit is closed (while charging). Even when not in use but still plugged into the socket, the primary circuit still consumes electricity because it is a closed circuit.

If you continuously plug in the charging cable without using it, electricity will still flow through the cable, causing a wasteful consumption of about 1.2W of electricity per day. The same goes for phone chargers, computer chargers, or desktop and laptop power cords. They should be completely unplugged; otherwise, they can consume up to 96W of electricity per day.

Other household appliances and refrigeration equipment
Some other household appliances and refrigeration equipment are also recommended to be completely disconnected from power when the homeowner is away, such as water heaters, washing machines, electric fans, or air conditioners… If these devices do not have power cords, you can turn off the circuit breaker.

The lighting system and other electrical outlets in the house can also be treated in a similar manner.
